The Maranta leuconeura ‘fascinator tricolor’ is a compact herbaceous plant, prized for its vibrant, colorful foliage. The leaves feature variations of green with red veins and markings that appear hand-painted, in a highly decorative and somewhat unexpected tricolor combination. This plant moves its leaves through nyctinasty, opening them during the day and closing them at night, and should be positioned in bright spaces, but away from direct sunlight to maintain its exotic appearance and enchanting colors. Make sure watering is moderate, ensuring the soil remains slightly moist in the top layer but never waterlogged, and watch out for stagnant water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes. After watering, ensure that drained water doesn’t sit to prevent root rot or drowning the plant.
Scientific name: Maranta leuconeura ‘fascinator tricolor’
Common names: Tricolor Maranta, Fascinator Tricolor Maranta
Family: Marantaceae
Origin: Central and South America, especially tropical regions of the Amazon
Climate: Tropical and subtropical
Category: Indoor plant
Approximate height: 25-30cm
Pot diameter: 12cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Requires abundant indirect light. Direct sun is not recommended and can burn the leaves. On the other hand, low light reduces the contrast of its colors and part of the plant’s beauty will be compromised.
Temperature: Thrives best between 18 °C and 27 °C.
Watering: The substrate should be kept slightly moist only at the top between waterings, as they don’t tolerate dryness. But they also don’t tolerate waterlogging (watch out for standing water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes). A good technique is to water when the first 2 cm are dry to the touch.
Humidity: Given its origin, this is a plant that appreciates high humidity levels (65-85%) so it shouldn’t be in environments with heating/cooling systems (they dry the air), and you can use a humidifier, trays with pebbles and water, or group it with other plants to create a microclimate and increase the relative humidity in your home.
Fertilization: Fertilize once a month during spring and summer with balanced fertilizer. Reduce or suspend in winter.
Pruning: Remove dry or damaged leaves to promote new growth and maintain aesthetics.
Life cycle: Perennial, when kept in an indoor environment.
Substrate type: Light, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter.
Pet Friendly: Safe for pets.
