The Garridas 1867 development in Benfica is set to gain a new green dimension, with the construction of the outdoor areas of plots 1 and 2 led by Horto do Campo Grande, based on the landscaping project developed by the renowned Broadway Malyan studio. With bespoke Horto Collection planters, vertical gardens and the creation of gardens featuring the planting of thousands of Mediterranean species, the intervention will help create outdoor spaces that are more balanced, welcoming and better integrated into urban life.
Inspired by the former Quinta das Garridas, which shaped Benfica’s history since the 19th century, Garridas 1867 revives the area’s architectural and landscape memory through a contemporary approach. The project is born in a neighbourhood deeply connected to Lisbon’s history, where once stood palatial estates, summer homes and extensive gardens that turned Benfica into one of the city’s most sought-after residential areas after the 1755 earthquake.
It was in this context that, in 1867, the Palacete da Quinta das Garridas was built, commissioned by Viscount Sanches de Baena. Decades later, this new development brings that historical heritage back and carries it into a residential project designed to meet today’s demands, without losing its connection to the place’s identity.
Developed and built by Teixeira Duarte, a group with over a century of activity and a strong presence in real estate development, Garridas 1867 continues the urban regeneration work the company has been carrying out in Benfica.

After Fábrica 1921, this new development reinforces the commitment to an integrated vision between architecture, housing, public space and landscape.
With 178 apartments, layouts ranging from one- to five-bedroom duplexes, private gardens, rooftops, a swimming pool, lounge, gourmet area, playground, gym and a scented garden, the development was designed to prioritise the relationship between indoors and outdoors, offering a lifestyle closer to nature in the city centre.
The landscaping project is by Broadway Malyan, an international architecture, urban planning and design studio founded in London in 1958, recognised for creating spaces where architecture, community and wellbeing connect in a coherent, integrated way.
At Garridas 1867, this approach translates into architecture that draws on references from Benfica’s former palacetes, reinterpreting them through contemporary materials and solutions suited to everyday urban life. The façades evoke the classic composition of palatial buildings, while the tiles and vertical copper elements strengthen the link to the area’s architectural memory.

It is within this framework that Horto do Campo Grande’s intervention comes in, responsible for delivering the gardens and green spaces for plots 1 and 2 of the development. This includes installing Horto Collection planters, creating vertical gardens, and planting dozens of trees and thousands of shrubs of Mediterranean species, carefully selected to suit the project’s environmental and urban conditions.
More than complementing the architecture, this intervention aims to integrate nature into the development’s everyday experience, creating areas for staying, comfort and natural privacy between the various shared and private spaces.
The Horto Collection planters, custom-developed for the project, will play an important role in organising and enhancing the outdoor spaces, helping to frame leisure areas, define routes and create green barriers in a subtle, functional way. The vertical gardens, in turn, will add depth and natural texture to the architectural ensemble, contributing to a more organic reading of the spaces.
The selection of species was also planned according to the specific characteristics of each area, prioritising Mediterranean vegetation adapted to the urban context, sun exposure and the development’s maintenance needs. The presence of trees and shrubs will enhance visual and environmental comfort, while also creating greater continuity between private gardens, shared spaces and the surrounding neighbourhood.
“The integration between architecture and landscape is now undeniable as a factor in urban value, contributing to the creation of places with greater meaning, able to reconcile functionality, sustainability and quality of life. Garridas 1867 is an example of this integrated approach, aligned with Horto do Campo Grande’s vision of valuing outdoor space as a structuring element of more qualified, resilient, people-centred cities,” says Vera Clara, Head of the Project and Construction Department for Green Spaces at Horto do Campo Grande.
