The PGA Aroeira Lisboa Portugal Open, one of Europe’s oldest golf tournaments, returns to the Lisbon region, specifically to Herdade da Aroeira, after three decades, and the main entrance roundabout of the condominium received a landscape revitalization to welcome it. All the work developed by Horto do Campo Grande took into account an increasingly present reality: the need to reduce water consumption.
More than a circulation element, a roundabout contributes to the image of a space and to the way it is perceived by those who move through it. The intervention therefore sought to create a careful composition that is coherent with the surrounding context, without depending on irrigation.
Given the existing water consumption restrictions, the solution favored species with greater resistance and suited to conditions of lower water availability, such as Aloe, Lampranthus, Hesperaloe, Echinocactus, Phormium tenax and Dracaena draco. Plants that were integrated into the proposed composition and that allowed for a diversity of forms, colors, volumes and textures with reduced water needs, reveals Rita Cabral, Agronomist in the Green Spaces Design and Construction Department at Horto do Campo Grande.

The ground cover was also designed for this scenario. The application of weed barrier fabric helps limit the development of spontaneous vegetation, reducing the need for maintenance interventions.
On this base, river pebbles took on a dual function: they visually completed the intervention and contributed to ground coverage suited to the chosen solution. Pine bark, which helps maintain substrate moisture, was used selectively, complementing the whole.
The result was a landscape solution designed to respond to the specific characteristics of the site and the existing water limitations, demonstrating how the choice of species and materials can determine the way to preserve an outdoor space.
