Hidroton Expanded Clay Pebbles 8 to 16 mm – ideal for Orchids and special plants (1.5 L)
Expanded Clay (Hidroton) is a mineral component widely used in substrate mixes for bonsai, orchids and other special plants. Made from natural clay expanded at high temperature, it has a light, porous and extremely stable structure, providing an excellent balance between drainage, aeration and moderate moisture retention.
Chemically stabilised and free from harmful salts, pests, fungi and weed seeds, it’s a safe and long-lasting material for growing. It can be used on its own in certain applications or mixed into substrate blends to significantly improve drainage and reduce the risk of waterlogged roots.
Thanks to its high porosity, it also promotes oxygen circulation in the root zone, helping roots grow healthier and stronger. It’s also often used as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots, preventing excessive water build-up.

Use
It can be used as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots or mixed into substrate blends, increasing aeration and helping excess water drain away.
In bonsai, it’s often combined with components such as Akadama, pumice, volcanic gravel or coco peat, allowing you to create substrates tailored to each species’ needs and growing conditions.
Benefits
Efficient drainage is one of the most important factors for a bonsai’s health. Using Expanded Clay helps reduce the risk of root suffocation and root rot, promoting a healthier, more balanced root system. Its high stability also helps maintain the substrate’s physical properties over long growing periods.
Composition: Chemically stabilised agricultural expanded clay.
