Olea Europaea
Common Names: Olive Tree
Family: Oleaceae
Origin: Mediterranean Region
An ancient tree, a symbol of peace and perseverance and with enormous historical weight, the olive tree is intimately linked to the Portuguese soul. Its thick greyish trunk, irregular shapes and dense foliage in different shades of green make the olive a very sculptural and decorative tree that will find a privileged place to grow on a terrace, balcony or in a garden.
The oil, “liquid gold”, that is extracted from the fruit of the olive tree, the olive, has been used since ancient times for food, medicinal purposes and lighting, while its leaves are traditionally used in natural and home treatments.
The size of the Olive Ball allows it to be planted in a vase, but it can also be planted in the ground alongside aromatic plants in a Mediterranean-inspired garden.
It’s perfect for a more rustic and trendy decoration, but indoors it should be kept for very short periods, as it is an outdoor tree, and even though it is a very hardy plant with the ability to adapt, when placed indoors it is unlikely to survive.
Did you know that due to its importance in Portuguese culture, this tree is one of the most cultivated species in Portugal? Versatile and resistant, the olive tree adapts very well to Portuguese soils, especially in the regions of Trás-os-Montes, Beira Interior, Ribatejo, Moura, Alentejo Interior and North Alentejo, known for producing the best Portuguese olive oil, an essential “ingredient” in Portuguese cuisine!
