The Olive tree (Olea europaea) is one of the most iconic species in the Bonsai world, admired for its longevity, aged-looking trunk and extraordinary resilience. Native to the Mediterranean region, it belongs to the Oleaceae family and has symbolized peace, wisdom and prosperity since ancient times.
It is a slow-growing tree with persistent foliage and small oval leaves in a grey-green shade, very well adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Under favorable conditions it can produce small white flowers in spring, followed by the characteristic olives. There is also the wild variety, known as Wild Olive, highly valued in Bonsai for its small leaf size and hardy wood, ideal for Jin and Shari work (deadwood).
Thanks to its resilience, excellent adaptation to pot cultivation and enormous capacity to develop ancient-looking trunks, Olea europaea is considered one of the noblest and most timeless species for Bonsai cultivation.

Light
The Olive tree should be grown outdoors all year round.
Place the Bonsai in a location where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day, preferably during the morning or late afternoon. Although it is a very hardy species, it should be protected from strong winds and more intense frosts.
Rotate your Bonsai about 180° weekly to promote uniform growth.
Watering
Water thoroughly until water comes out of the pot’s drainage holes, evenly moistening the entire substrate. Always water from above, preferably using a fine-nozzle watering can specifically for Bonsai.
Before watering again, let the surface layer of the soil dry slightly and check the moisture by touching the substrate with your fingers.
Olea europaea tolerates short periods of drought well, but develops better when the substrate remains slightly moist, without waterlogging.
Never leave water standing in the pot saucer.
It is not necessary to spray the foliage regularly, except when applying foliar fertilizers, always ensuring that the leaves are dry before nightfall.
Nutrition
Between February and October, regular fertilization with a specific Bonsai fertilizer is recommended, supplemented with a biostimulant that promotes balanced growth, good branching and healthy foliage.
Pruning
The Olive tree responds very well to pruning.
To maintain a compact crown, allow the branches to grow until they develop 5 to 6 pairs of leaves, then prune to maintain the desired shape.
If you wish to encourage flowering and possible fruiting, you can carry out structural pruning after winter and allow some branches to grow before maintenance pruning, as frequent pruning often removes flower buds.
Transplant
Repotting should be carried out during February, using a specific substrate for deciduous Bonsai.
Whenever necessary, take advantage of this operation to carry out heavy root pruning and partial defoliation.
Wiring
It can be wired practically all year round. Young branches are easily shaped, and the wire should be checked regularly to avoid marks on the bark during the growing period.
Interesting facts: The Olive tree is one of the trees cultivated by humans for over 5,000 years, being one of the greatest symbols of Mediterranean culture. In Bonsai, it is especially valued for its ability to develop thick, twisted and very ancient-looking trunks, even in relatively young specimens.
In addition to its ornamental value, it is also one of the most resilient species for Bonsai cultivation, tolerating heat, drought and heavy pruning well. Under ideal conditions, it can produce small white flowers followed by miniature olives, making each specimen even more special.

*All bonsais are shipped in the box seen in the photograph, which comes closed (to protect the plant during transport), but the front opening is simple as there’s a perforation that allows opening of the “window”, as shown in the image. The ribbon/card is only sent during festive seasons.
