The Pyracantha (Pyracantha coccinea), also known as Firethorn, is one of the most ornamental Bonsai species, standing out for its abundant spring flowering and spectacular production of colorful berries during autumn and winter. Native to southern Europe and Western Asia, it belongs to the Rosaceae family and is highly valued for its hardiness, vigor, and high decorative value.
It is an evergreen shrub with small dark green glossy leaves, densely branched stems, and characteristic thorns. In spring it produces numerous white flowers grouped in small clusters, which later give rise to ornamental berries in red, orange, or yellow, depending on the variety. These fruits can remain on the plant for several months, making this Bonsai especially attractive in the colder seasons.

CUIDADOS
Light
Pyracantha coccinea should be grown outdoors all year round. It prefers very bright locations or full sun, an essential condition for abundant flowering and for the formation and coloring of the fruits.
It tolerates cold, wind, and moderate frosts very well, requiring the natural alternation of seasons to properly complete its growth cycle.
Rotate your Bonsai about 180° weekly to promote uniform growth.
Watering
Water thoroughly until water comes out of the pot’s drainage holes, evenly moistening the entire substrate. Preferably use a fine-rose watering can suitable for Bonsai.
Before watering again, allow the surface layer of soil to dry slightly and check moisture with your fingers. During spring and summer it may require more frequent watering due to its vigorous growth.
Avoid both prolonged dryness and excess water.
Never leave water standing in the pot saucer.
Regular misting of the foliage is not necessary.
Nutrition
Between February and November, regular fertilization with a specific Bonsai fertilizer is recommended. During spring and after flowering, balanced nutrition promotes healthy plant development and fruit formation.
Pruning
Maintenance pruning should be carried out throughout the growing period, reducing new shoots to preserve the canopy shape. After flowering, light pruning can be performed, taking care to preserve the branches that will produce the ornamental fruits.
As it has thorns, wearing gloves during pruning operations is recommended.
Transplant
Repotting should be carried out between February and March, before budding begins, using a specific substrate for deciduous Bonsai. Take the opportunity to do a moderate root prune, whenever needed.
Wiring
It can be wired during spring and autumn. Young branches are relatively flexible but quickly become woody, so the wire should be checked regularly to avoid marks on the bark.
Interesting facts: The name Pyracantha derives from the Greek words pyr (fire) and akantha (thorn), referring to its thorns and the showy red, orange, or yellow berries that illuminate the plant during autumn and winter. These berries are an important food source for many birds during the colder months.
When grown as Bonsai, Pyracantha coccinea is especially valued for the combination of delicate white spring flowering and abundant fruiting, offering high ornamental interest throughout practically the entire year.
