Sageretia (Sageretia theezans) is a tropical species highly prized in the Bonsai world for its delicate foliage, ornamental bark, and elegant branching. Native to Central and Southern Asia, it belongs to the Rhamnaceae family and stands out for its small, glossy green leaves and spring budding, which takes on a beautiful pinkish hue when exposed to good light.
It is an evergreen shrub with a very particular characteristic: the bark continuously renews itself, peeling off in thin layers that reveal different tones on the trunk, giving it an aged look much appreciated by Bonsai lovers.
Thanks to its compact growth, elegant habit, and year-round ornamental interest, Sageretia theezans is an excellent choice for those looking for a distinct Bonsai of great natural beauty.

Light
Place the Bonsai indoors, near a window (up to about 50 cm away), where it receives 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day, preferably during the morning or late afternoon. Avoid spots with curtains, low light, heat sources, or air conditioning.
During spring and summer it can stay outdoors, as long as it is protected from the most intense sun during the middle of the day. It can also be grown outdoors year-round in mild climates, provided it is well protected from frost. Temperatures below 12 °C can cause partial or total leaf drop.
Rotate your Bonsai about 180° weekly to promote uniform growth.
Watering
Water thoroughly until water comes out of the pot’s drainage holes, evenly moistening the entire substrate. Always water from above, preferably using a fine-nozzle watering can specifically for Bonsai.
Before watering again, let the surface layer of the soil dry slightly and check the moisture by touching the substrate with your fingers.
Sageretia theezans prefers a slightly moist substrate but does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
Never leave water standing in the pot saucer.
Regular misting of the foliage is not necessary, except when applying foliar fertilizers, always ensuring the leaves are dry before nightfall to reduce the risk of fungi.
Nutrition
Between February and November, regular fertilization with a specific Bonsai fertilizer is recommended, complemented with a biostimulant to promote balanced growth, good branching, and healthy foliage.
Pruning
Sageretia theezans responds very well to pruning, easily putting out new shoots.
To maintain a compact canopy, let the branches grow until they develop 6 to 8 leaves, then prune back to 2 to 3 leaves on each shoot.
Structural pruning can be carried out during practically the entire growth period.
Transplant
Repotting should be done between April and May, using a specific substrate for broadleaf Bonsai.
Whenever necessary, take advantage of this operation to perform a heavy root pruning and/or partial defoliation, encouraging the tree’s renewal.
Wiring
Wiring is uncommon for this species, as its branches are relatively brittle. When necessary, it can be done year-round, and should be performed with special care to avoid damaging the branches.
Curiosities
One of the most striking features of Sageretia theezans is the continuous renewal of its bark, which peels off in thin layers to reveal different tones on the trunk, providing an aged look highly valued in the art of Bonsai.
When grown in ideal light conditions, new growth often shows delicate pink tones, creating a beautiful contrast with the more mature dark green foliage. This combination of ornamental bark, delicate foliage, and colourful budding makes Sageretia one of the most elegant tropical species for Bonsai cultivation.
