Serissa Bonsai 5 years – Serissa foetida
Serissa (Serissa foetida) is one of the most appreciated Bonsai for the delicacy of its foliage and its abundant white blooms, which is why it’s often known as the “Tree of a Thousand Stars”. It belongs to the Rubiaceae family, the same as the coffee plant, and is native to Southern China and Japan. The name foetida comes from the distinctive smell the leaves and branches release when crushed or pruned.
It’s an evergreen shrub with small, oval leaves, very branched and compact-growing—features that make this species an excellent choice for Bonsai. In good growing conditions it can flower several times throughout the year, with blooms usually most abundant from late spring to summer. The small white flowers contrast elegantly with the dark green foliage, giving it high ornamental value.
Despite its delicate appearance, it’s a very resilient species when grown in the right conditions. Serissa likes bright environments, mild temperatures, and some stability, and doesn’t respond well to frequent changes of location.

CUIDADOS
Light
Place it in a very bright spot, ideally near a window, where it gets 2 to 3 hours of direct sun per day—preferably in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid placing it near heaters, air conditioning, or draughts.
During spring and summer it can stay outdoors, as long as it’s protected from intense sun during the hottest hours. It doesn’t tolerate temperatures below around 10–12 °C for long periods. To keep growth balanced, it’s recommended to rotate the Bonsai about 180° once a week.
Watering
Water thoroughly until water comes out of the pot’s drainage holes, evenly moistening the entire substrate. Water should always be applied from above, preferably using a fine-rose watering can specifically for Bonsai.
Before watering again, let the top layer of soil dry slightly and check moisture by touching the substrate with your fingers.
Serissa has moderate water needs, but it’s sensitive to excess moisture and can develop root problems if it stays constantly waterlogged. Never leave water standing in the pot saucer. Regular misting of the foliage is not necessary. Only do this when applying foliar fertilisers, making sure the leaves dry before nightfall to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Nutrition
Between February and November, regular fertilising with a Bonsai-specific fertiliser is recommended, complemented with a biostimulant that promotes balanced growth, abundant flowering, and healthy foliage.
Pruning
It tolerates maintenance pruning very well and can be pruned frequently to keep its shape and encourage denser branching.
Heavier shaping prunes are usually done in early summer, when it responds with vigorous new growth.
Transplant
Repotting should generally be done every two years, between April and May, using a Bonsai substrate for broadleaf trees. Take the opportunity to do a moderate root prune, whenever needed.
Wiring
Wiring is uncommon in this species, as its branches are relatively fragile and brittle. When needed, it can be done almost all year round, and the wire should be checked regularly to avoid marks on the bark.
Fun fact: Serissa is known internationally as the “Tree of a Thousand Stars” due to the many star-shaped white flowers it produces during the flowering season. Although the scientific name Serissa foetida is still widely used in the Bonsai trade, the currently accepted botanical name is Serissa japonica.

– Representative photograph – The image shown corresponds to a specimen in stock at the time the product was photographed, serving as a reference only. The Bonsai supplied will be similar to the one shown, and may vary slightly in shape, size, foliage density, leaf colour, or presence of flowers, depending on the time of year and its growth cycle.
– The ceramic pot shown in the photograph is included in the item price and the approximate height indicated.
*All bonsais are shipped in the box seen in the photograph, which comes closed (to protect the plant during transport), but the front opening is simple as there’s a perforation that allows opening of the “window”, as shown in the image. During festive seasons, it comes with a bow.
