Scientific name: Magnolia grandiflora
Family: Magnoliaceae
Origin: Southeastern United States
The Magnolia grandiflora is a medium-sized tree with year-round green leaves and a full, pyramid-shaped crown. It blooms between May and June, producing large, solitary and fragrant flowers. When we say that the flowers are solitary, it means that each one grows on its own at the end of the branches, unlike other plants that have flowers in groups or clusters. These flowers start with a conical shape and can reach up to 25 cm in diameter when open, with white or creamy white petals and a centre full of purple stamens. The fruits resemble small oval pine cones about 10 cm long. They appear vertically on the branches and change from pink to brown as they ripen. When they open, they release bright red seeds about 1 to 1.3 cm long.
