Care
Light: Prefers bright locations, adapting to both full sun and partial shade. In very hot climates, it is advisable to provide some shade during the hottest hours of the day.
Temperature: Cold-resistant, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C.
Watering: Needs regular watering, especially during the hottest months. In winter, the frequency can be reduced.
Humidity: Prefers moderately moist soil, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Apply organic fertiliser or compost in early spring to stimulate growth and flowering.
Height: 50–60 cm.
Pruning: Does not require frequent pruning. Remove dry or damaged branches to maintain shape and promote plant renewal.
Life cycle: Evergreen.
Substrate type: Fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
Not Pet Friendly: The berries are toxic if ingested by pets.
Interesting fact: Despite its common name ‘sacred bamboo’, Nandina domestica does not belong to the bamboo family. The name is due to the similarity of its leaves to those of bamboo and its traditional use in Asian gardens as an ornamental plant.
