Scientific name: Ficus benjamina
Common names: Benjamin Fig Tree; Benjamin Ficus; Weeping Ficus
Family: Moraceae
Origin: Tropical regions of Asia and Australia
Ficus benjamina is a small to medium-sized tree that can grow up to 30 metres tall in its natural habitat, but when grown in pots or as an indoor plant, it usually reaches between 1.5 and 3 metres. Its leaves are small, shiny and green, with an oval, pointed shape. The branches are thin and flexible, allowing the plant to be moulded into various shapes, such as braided or spiral. When grown outdoors, it can develop a dense, wide canopy.
Lighting: It prefers environments with indirect light. Direct exposure to the sun can burn the leaves, while a lack of light can cause leaf fall.
Watering: Watering should be moderate. Keep the soil moist, but never soaked. Water when the surface begins to dry out.
Fertilising: Every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer, using a balanced fertiliser for indoor plants.
Care: It is sensitive to abrupt changes in environment, which can cause leaves to fall. Avoid moving it frequently and keep it away from cold draughts or intense heat.
