Bell pepper is one of the most popular veg plants to grow at home, whether in the veg patch, in beds, or in a good-sized pot. With an upright, branching habit, it produces small pale flowers that develop into the well-known fleshy, glossy fruits, whose colour changes as they ripen.
Depending on the variety and ripeness, the fruits can come in different shapes, sizes and colours, with green, yellow, orange and red being common. In sweet peppers, the flesh is thick, crisp and mild-flavoured, and can be eaten raw in salads or used in a huge range of cooked dishes.
It’s a plant that loves warmth, plenty of sun, and a sheltered spot. In Portugal it can be grown outdoors during the warm season, needing regular watering and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. It can be grown directly in the veg patch or in a pot, making it an excellent choice for sunny balconies and terraces. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends exactly that: a warm, sunny, sheltered position, with fertile, well-drained soil.
Scientific name: Capsicum annuum L.
Common name: Bell pepper, sweet pepper

Approximate height: 55-60cm
Pot diameter/volume: 12cm (1L)
CUIDADOS
Light: Needs full sun and a warm, sheltered location. Ideally, it should get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Good sun exposure supports growth, flowering and fruit ripening. The RHS lists full sun as the recommended exposure.
Temperature: Likes mild to warm temperatures and is sensitive to cold and frost. Growth is boosted by warmth, and it should be grown outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
Watering: Regular and consistent, keeping the growing medium slightly moist, but never waterlogged. Avoid big swings between dry spells and too much water, especially during flowering and fruit set. In pots, always ensure good drainage and avoid water collecting in the saucer or in decorative pots without drainage holes. The RHS recommends keeping the growing medium evenly moist with regular watering.
Pruning/Maintenance: Generally doesn’t need pruning. You can remove dry or damaged leaves or branches and, when needed, add a stake to support the plant as the fruits develop. Pinching out the tips of young shoots can also encourage branching.
Life cycle: Although botanically it can behave as a perennial in suitable conditions, it’s usually grown as an annual in our veg patches.
Soil: Prefers fertile, organic-matter-rich, well-drained soils that can still hold some moisture. In pots, use a quality growing medium suitable for vegetable plants.
Fertilising: During growth, you can use a fertiliser suitable for vegetable plants. After the first fruits appear, a potassium-rich feed is especially recommended to support fruiting.
Not Pet Friendly: As a precaution, keep the plant out of reach of pets and avoid ingestion of leaves, stems or fruits in quantity.
