Rosemary is an aromatic, perennial, and woody shrub, highly valued for its resilience, intense fragrance, and ornamental and culinary versatility. It displays predominantly upright growth, with ascending branches that can reach around 2 metres in height when grown in the ground under favourable conditions, distinguishing it from prostrate Rosemary varieties, with a low-growing habit.
Very well adapted to the Mediterranean climate, it is a plant that enjoys direct sun and tolerates heat and periods of drought well, especially when established in the ground. Its leaves are narrow, dark green on the upper surface and lighter underneath, releasing an intense and characteristic aroma when touched.
The small flowers, usually in shades of blue to lilac, can appear at different times of the year, often from winter through to spring, and may repeat their flowering. Beyond its ornamental value, Rosemary is a nectar-rich plant, highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, contributing to the biodiversity of gardens.
Widely used in Mediterranean cuisine to flavour meats, fish, vegetables, and other dishes, it also has a long tradition of use as an aromatic and medicinal plant.
It can be grown directly in the garden, in beds and herb gardens, but also in pots and planters, making it an excellent choice for terraces, balconies, and other sunny outdoor spaces.
Scientific name: Salvia rosmarinus (syn. Rosmarinus officinalis)
Common name: Rosemary
FamÃlia: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean Region
Climate: Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 20cm
Pot diameter: 10,5cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers direct sun exposure, ideally with at least 6 hours of sun per day, for healthy growth, vigorous foliage, and good development of fragrance. It tolerates some partial shade, but may display less compact growth and reduced aromatic intensity.
Temperature: Adapts very well to hot, dry climates, being particularly suited to the Mediterranean conditions of Portugal. It tolerates cold and moderate frosts when well established, though it may be affected by intense and prolonged frosts, especially if grown in a pot. In regions with very harsh winters, it may benefit from a more sheltered location.
Watering: Moderate, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. Rosemary is a drought-resistant plant when well established in the ground, but when grown in a pot it requires closer attention, as the substrate dries out more quickly, especially during the warm months. In summer, it may need more frequent watering, depending on sun exposure, temperature, and pot size. Water thoroughly when necessary, allowing excess water to drain away, and avoid keeping the substrate permanently moist or waterlogged, as excess water can cause root rot. During winter, reduce the frequency of watering.
Humidity: Prefers relatively dry, well-ventilated environments. It does not require high ambient humidity and is sensitive to excessive moisture accumulation around the roots, especially when combined with low temperatures.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers light, loose soils with excellent drainage. It adapts to relatively poor soils and tolerates different pH values, including calcareous soils. When grown in a pot, use a well-draining substrate, which can be improved with mineral components such as coarse horticultural sand or perlite, to promote aeration and prevent excessive water retention. The pot should have drainage holes.
Fertilisation: It is a plant with low nutrient requirements. When grown in the ground, it generally does not require frequent fertilisation. In a pot, it may benefit from a light application of balanced fertiliser in spring, following the doses indicated by the manufacturer. Avoid over-fertilisation, especially with nitrogen, which can encourage overly soft growth at the expense of aromatic intensity.
Pruning/Maintenance: Light pruning is recommended after flowering or during the active growing period, to encourage branching and maintain a compact, balanced habit. Regular harvesting of the branch tips for culinary use also contributes to denser growth. Avoid pruning too deeply into old woody branches, which may struggle to produce new shoots. When grown for several years in a pot, it may need to be transplanted into a larger container as the root system develops, ensuring sufficient space for growth and good drainage.
Flowering: Produces small flowers, usually blue to lilac, highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. In Portugal, flowering can occur at different times of the year, often from winter through to spring, and may repeat in other seasons, depending on climatic conditions.
Life cycle: Perennial, with evergreen foliage.
Pet Friendly: Considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, according to the ASPCA. Nevertheless, it is recommended to avoid ingestion of large quantities of any plant by pets, as it may cause digestive discomfort.
Curiosity: Rosemary is one of the most emblematic aromatic plants of the Mediterranean landscape. Its characteristic aroma comes from the essential oils present in the leaves, whose composition and intensity can vary with growing conditions. It is also an excellent plant for low-maintenance gardens and Mediterranean-inspired gardens, especially when grown in the ground, in sunny, well-drained locations.
