Ceropegia - Ceropegia woodii (12cm pot)
Ceropegia woodii (widely known by its English name – String of Hearts) is a trailing indoor plant highly prized for the delicacy of its thin stems and small heart-shaped leaves, adorned with an elegant green and silver marbled pattern. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, it is native to the arid regions of southern Africa, where it grows as a creeper or trails among rocks and low vegetation.
Also known as Chain of Hearts, this species stands out for its fast growth and the light, elegant appearance of its long vines, which can reach several metres in length when grown in good conditions. During spring and summer, it produces small pink-purple tubular flowers with a very curious shape that adds even more ornamental interest.
Extremely hardy and easy to maintain, Ceropegia woodii is an excellent choice for hanging pots, shelves, or high spots where its trailing stems can grow freely.
Scientific name: Ceropegia woodii
Common name: Ceropegia, Rosary Vine, String of Hearts
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe
Category: Indoor plant
Pot diameter: 12cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers very bright spots with plenty of indirect light. It tolerates a few hours of soft direct sun, especially during the morning or late afternoon, which encourages more compact growth and more intense leaf colour. Avoid low-light areas, where stems tend to stretch excessively and lose density.
Watering: Let the substrate dry out almost completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain completely through the pot’s drainage holes. Never leave water sitting in the saucer or decorative pot without drainage. During winter, significantly reduce the frequency of watering.
Humidity: Adapts very well to normal home environments and does not require regular misting.
Temperature: Thrives best between 18°C and 28°C. Does not tolerate frost or temperatures below 10°C for prolonged periods.
Soil: Prefers very light and well-drained substrates, suitable for cacti and succulents or enriched with perlite or coarse sand, avoiding water accumulation around the roots.
Fertilising: During spring and summer, we recommend applying a liquid fertiliser for green plants or succulents about once a month, always following the manufacturer’s recommended doses. Stop fertilising during winter.
Pet Friendly: Generally considered a safe plant for pets.
Curiosities: Despite its delicate appearance, Ceropegia woodii is surprisingly drought-resistant thanks to the small tubers it develops along the stems and roots, where it stores water and nutrients.
Its common name, String of Hearts, is due to the small heart-shaped leaves that grow in pairs along the trailing stems, creating a very decorative effect. Under ideal conditions, it can produce small aerial tubers on the vines, allowing for extremely easy propagation.
