Ficus Lyrata (21 cm pot)
The Ficus lyrata is a fig variety known for its large, glossy leaves that resemble a fiddle. With its distinctive and exuberant shape, this plant is a true work of nature’s art.
In nature, and under the right conditions, it can grow over 10 m tall. In a pot, however, it reaches a maximum of 3 to 4 m. It doesn’t like very dry environments, which can cause brown spots on the leaves and/or leaf drop. Keep it away from dehumidifiers or heating/cooling systems. A simple way to balance humidity and spot pests early is to wipe the leaves with a soft cloth dampened with water. This Ficus’ exotic, elegant look makes it a very trendy choice for interior décor.
Scientific name: Ficus lyrata
Common names: Fiddle-leaf fig
Family: Moraceae
Origin: West Africa
Category: Indoor plant
Approximate height: 90-100cm
Pot diameter: 21cm
CUIDADOS
Light: It likes plenty of bright, indirect light, but avoid direct sun. It won’t cope with shady spaces.
Temperature: It doesn’t tolerate low temperatures. 10°C is the minimum.
Watering: Moderate, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Be careful not to waterlog the roots (avoid standing water in the saucer or in decorative pots without drainage holes).
Fertilising: Feed with nitrogen- and potassium-rich products from spring to late summer, following the instructions on the label of the product used.
Pruning: Occasional, to control growth and keep the plant healthy (e.g., cutting off dry/weakened leaves).
Not pet-friendly: Note that Ficus lyrata can be toxic to pets such as dogs and cats if ingested. Therefore, it is recommended to keep the plant out of their reach and watch out for any signs of ingestion of the leaves.
Fun fact: Besides its beauty, it’s known for helping purify the air by removing toxins and improving indoor air quality.
