Violet - Streptocarpus ionanthus / Saintpaulia (1 unit, 12 cm pot)
The African violet is a small tropical indoor plant, much appreciated for its abundant flowering and compact rosette shape. It has fleshy, velvety leaves, usually dark green, from which delicate flowers emerge and can remain on the plant for long periods. With good light and suitable conditions, it can produce successive blooms for much of the year.
This item is supplied in assorted colours and may have purple or pink flowers (darker or lighter shades), depending on the specimens available in stock at the time the order is prepared.
Scientific name: Streptocarpus ionanthus (synonym: Saintpaulia ionantha)
Common name: African violet
Family: Gesneriaceae
Origin: East Africa – Tanzania and Kenya
Climate: Tropical
Category: Indoor plant
Approximate height: 20cm
Pot diameter: 12cm
AVAILABLE COLOURS: Purple, light/dark | Pink, light/dark

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers plenty of bright, indirect or filtered natural light. Avoid intense direct sun, especially through a window during the hottest months, as it may scorch the leaves. Insufficient light can reduce or prevent flowering.
Temperature: Prefers mild to warm, relatively stable environments. It is sensitive to cold and draughts, so it should be kept away from very cold windows, air-conditioning units, and other sources of sudden temperature changes.
Watering: Water moderately, letting the top layer of the substrate start to dry between waterings. Avoid both prolonged dryness and waterlogging. Water directly onto the substrate, trying not to wet the leaves and flowers, and never leave the pot permanently standing in water.
Humidity: Enjoys some ambient humidity, but also needs good air circulation. Avoid excessively dry environments and proximity to heating sources or air conditioning.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers a light substrate, rich in organic matter and with good drainage. You can use a substrate suitable for indoor plants or one specifically for African violets.
Fertilising: During growth and flowering periods, regularly apply a fertiliser suitable for flowering plants, following the dosage and frequency indicated by the manufacturer. Reduce fertilising during periods of slower growth.
Pruning/Maintenance: Remove dry or damaged leaves and faded flowers at the base, helping to keep the plant tidy and encourage new blooms.
Flowering: It can flower for several months and, when grown under suitable light and temperature conditions, produce successive blooms throughout the year. The flowers may be single or double, depending on the variety.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Pet Friendly: The African violet is considered non-toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA.
Fun fact: Although it is still widely known as Saintpaulia, the African violet is currently botanically classified in the genus Streptocarpus. Therefore, the accepted name is Streptocarpus ionanthus, with Saintpaulia ionantha being a botanical synonym.
