Spider Plant - Chlorophytum comosum (19cm pot)
The Spider Plant is a true indoor classic: resilient, versatile, easy to care for, and instantly recognisable by its long, slender arched leaves that form an elegant cascade of green foliage. It is an excellent choice if you are looking for a low-maintenance plant with relatively fast growth. It adapts to various light conditions and looks particularly decorative in hanging pots, elevated stands, or shelves, where the foliage and stems can develop freely, adding personality to any space.
It is also one of the species studied for its ability to capture certain indoor air pollutants, such as formaldehyde, contributing in its own way to the quality of the environment around you.
One of the most curious features of Chlorophytum comosum is its long, arched stems, which produce small white flowers followed by tiny plantlets—the well-known “spiderettes”. These can remain attached to the mother plant, creating a beautiful decorative cascading effect, or be used to propagate new plants.
Although primarily grown as an indoor plant, in the mild climate of many Portuguese regions, it can also be kept outdoors, preferably in a sheltered, bright spot protected from intense direct sun and frost. It is a great option for protected balconies, patios, and terraces.
Due to its easy maintenance, resilience, and adaptability, it is an excellent choice whether you are just starting to care for plants or looking to add volume and movement to a Plant Styling composition.
Scientific name: Chlorophytum comosum

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers spots with plenty of indirect or filtered natural light. It tolerates lower light conditions, although growth may become slower and the plant less dense. When outdoors, it should be protected from intense direct sun, especially during the hottest hours of summer.
Temperature: Prefers mild to warm temperatures. In Portugal, it can stay outdoors in mild and sheltered climates, but it must be protected from frost and intense cold. When grown in a pot, it is naturally more exposed to temperature fluctuations.
Watering: Moderate. Water when the top layer of the substrate begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away completely. Avoid keeping the substrate permanently waterlogged and never leave water sitting in the saucer or decorative pot. During winter and in lower light conditions, space out the waterings.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers a light, fertile, and well-drained substrate. A good universal or indoor plant substrate will be suitable, provided it allows for good water drainage.
Fertilisation: It is not particularly demanding but benefits from fertilisation during the active growth period, especially in spring and summer. Apply a fertiliser suitable for green plants, following the dosage and frequency indicated by the manufacturer.
Pruning/Maintenance: Remove dry or damaged leaves near the base. The stems that produce flowers and spiderettes can be kept for their decorative effect or cut back when they dry out or if you wish to control the plant’s volume. The small plantlets can be easily rooted to grow new plants.
Flowering: It can produce small white flowers on long, arched stems, where the characteristic plantlets later develop. However, it is grown mainly for the ornamental interest of its foliage and the effect produced by the “spiderettes”.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Pet Friendly: Chlorophytum comosum is considered safe for cats and dogs.
Curiosity: The small plants that develop at the ends of the stems are young versions of the mother plant and can be used for propagation. It is precisely the appearance of these hanging plantlets that gives rise to the name Spider Plant.
