The Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa) is a tropical climbing plant distinguished by its large, glossy green leaves that, as they mature, develop the characteristic splits and perforations.
It’s a relatively easy plant to care for and prefers abundant indirect light, although it tolerates lower-light environments – under these conditions, however, growth tends to be slower and the leaves may develop fewer splits and perforations. Regular cleaning of the leaves helps remove dust, maintaining their glossy appearance and making it easier to spot any pests.
In nature, Monstera has a climbing and hemiepiphytic habit, developing aerial roots that allow it to anchor itself and climb up tree trunks. At home, it therefore benefits from using a support stake or other support structure as it grows.
Young plants generally have entire leaves or leaves with few openings. The characteristic splits and perforations become more evident as the plant matures, and are also favoured by good light and growing conditions. Flowering is possible in mature specimens, but is uncommon when grown as a houseplant. The inflorescence is typical of the Araceae, consisting of a spadix surrounded by a pale spathe.
Scientific name: Monstera deliciosa

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers abundant indirect or filtered light. Tolerates lower-light environments, although it may grow more slowly and produce less fenestrated leaves. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sun, especially through a window during the hottest hours, as this may cause leaf burn.
Temperature: Prefers warm and relatively stable environments. Around 18–24 °C is a good reference range for indoor cultivation, avoiding low temperatures, cold draughts and sudden changes.
Watering: Water when the top layer of the substrate has started to dry, watering evenly and allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid keeping the substrate constantly moist or leaving water pooled in the saucer/cachepot, as waterlogging can cause root rot. During autumn and winter, or in less bright environments, drying is slower and watering should naturally be more spaced out. Checking the substrate moisture with your finger before watering is a good practice.
Humidity: Appreciates some ambient humidity, characteristic of its tropical habitat, but generally adapts to normal household conditions. Avoid placing it near heat sources or very dry air currents.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers a substrate rich in organic matter, aerated and with good drainage, able to retain some moisture without remaining waterlogged. A substrate suitable for green/tropical plants, enriched with components that promote aeration and drainage, is a good option.
Fertilisation: Fertilise during the most active growth period, generally from spring to early autumn, with a fertiliser suitable for green plants, following the dosage indicated by the manufacturer. Reduce or suspend fertilisation during the months of slower growth.
Maintenance: Clean the leaves regularly with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust. You can guide the stems and aerial roots onto a support stake as the plant grows. Remove dry or damaged leaves when necessary.
Not Pet Friendly: Monstera deliciosa is toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Ingestion can cause irritation and burning in the mouth, tongue and lips, excessive salivation, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.
Fun fact: The specific name “deliciosa” refers to the plant’s fruit, which can be edible when fully ripe. However, other parts of the plant contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and the unripe fruit should also not be consumed. Fruiting is very uncommon in specimens grown indoors.
