Boxwood - Buxus sempervirens (30 cm pot)
Buxus sempervirens is a slow-growing evergreen shrub, widely used in formal gardens and topiary. The ball shape is achieved through regular pruning that gives it a compact, dense and elegant appearance. It features small, oval, dark green and glossy leaves that remain throughout the year, making it ideal for creating low hedges, borders and decorative pots. Its resilience and ability to be shaped make it one of the most classic ornamental plants in traditional and contemporary gardens.
Scientific name: Buxus sempervirens
Common names: Boxwood, Common Box
Family: Buxaceae
Origin: Mediterranean region and Western Europe
Climate: Temperate, Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 50cm
Pot diameter: 30cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Adapts to full sun or partial shade. In very hot climates, it benefits from some protection during the most intense sunlight hours.
Temperature: Tolerates cold and frost well, withstanding down to around –15 °C. Prefers temperate climates.
Watering: Moderate. Soil should be kept slightly moist, especially for potted plants. Avoid waterlogging, as roots are sensitive to excess water.
Humidity: Prefers fresh, well-drained soil. Doesn’t like excessively dry environments for long periods.
Fertilization: Apply slow-release fertilizer for shrubs in early spring and again in summer to stimulate growth and maintain dense, green foliage.
Pruning: Essential to maintain the rounded shape. Should be done 2 to 3 times a year, between spring and early autumn, avoiding the hottest periods.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Soil: Fertile, fresh, calcareous or clay-sandy substrate, always well-drained. Tolerates different soil types as long as they are not too acidic or waterlogged.
Not Pet Friendly: Although mildly toxic, ingestion of leaves may cause gastrointestinal disturbances in pets.
Fun fact: Boxwood has been cultivated for centuries in Europe and was highly valued in Renaissance and Baroque gardens for creating mazes and geometric shapes. Its wood is extremely dense and was traditionally used for fine carvings and musical instruments.
