Hebe - Veronica sp. (17cm pot)
Hebe, now botanically included in the genus Veronica, is a compact ornamental shrub, much appreciated for the combination of its evergreen foliage with the many flower spikes that appear in different shades, depending on the variety.
It forms a dense, branched plant, with green leaves and flowers grouped in spikes, which can show shades of white, pink, lilac, violet or purplish-blue. Its compact habit and low maintenance needs make it an excellent option for gardens, beds, borders, window boxes and pots.
Many Hebes are also a good choice for coastal gardens, adapting well to places exposed to maritime influence. The flowers are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, contributing to garden biodiversity.
Scientific name: Veronica sp. (traditionally sold as Hebe)
Common names: Hebe, Veronica
Family: Plantaginaceae
Origin: Mainly New Zealand, depending on the species/hybrid
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 35-40cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers spots with direct sun or bright partial shade. It flowers more abundantly when it gets several hours of sun a day.
Temperature: Grows best in mild climates. It tolerates moderate cold and occasional light frosts, as long as it’s well established and in well-drained soil.
Watering: Moderate. Water regularly during the first few months after planting and during periods of intense heat. Once established, it’s quite resistant to short dry spells.
Humidity: Doesn’t like waterlogging. It should be grown in well-drained soils.
Soil: It adapts to different soil types, preferring light, well-drained soils. Avoid ground that is prone to prolonged waterlogging.
Fertilising: Apply fertiliser for outdoor flowering plants at the start of spring and repeat during the growing season, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pruning: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage new blooms. It can be lightly pruned after flowering to keep a compact shape and encourage branching.
Not pet-friendly: There aren’t sufficiently specific veterinary references to confirm the safety of all species and hybrids sold as Hebe. As a precaution, you should prevent pets from ingesting the plant.
Fun fact: The genus Hebe was named in honour of the Greek goddess of youth. It is currently placed in the family Plantaginaceae, although for many years it was included in the family Scrophulariaceae. Its long flowering period and excellent hardiness make this plant one of the most popular choices for low-maintenance gardens.
