Hibiscus - Hibiscus x rosa sinensis (17 cm pot)
Hibiscus is a perennial shrub with evergreen foliage, much appreciated for its large, showy flowers and its dark-green, glossy leaves with serrated edges. With a bushy, branched growth habit, it is excellent for growing in pots and planter boxes, creating accents of colour on balconies, patios and terraces, or directly in the garden, as a specimen plant, in groups, or forming small flowering hedges.
Its flowers can come in a wide range of colours, including red, pink, yellow, orange and white, depending on the cultivar. Each flower lasts for a very short time, usually only one or two days, but when the plant is in suitable conditions, new buds open in succession, providing a very long flowering period. In Portugal, flowering is mainly concentrated in the warmer months, from spring to autumn, and may extend in particularly mild, sheltered locations.
Scientific name: Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis
Common names: Hibiscus, China rose, Venus’ mallow
Family: Malvaceae
Origin: Horticultural hybrid/cultigen, associated with South Pacific ancestors
Climate: Tropical, subtropical, and mild Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 50-60cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm
CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers very bright locations with a few hours of direct sun, an important condition for abundant flowering. In Portugal, especially during summer and when grown in a smaller pot, it benefits from some protection from the strongest sun during the hottest hours, particularly on very exposed balconies or terraces.
Temperature: Likes mild to warm temperatures and is sensitive to cold and frost. In Portugal it adapts particularly well to regions with mild winters. In areas subject to frost or intense cold, it should be grown in a sheltered position or in a pot, allowing it to be protected during winter.
Watering: Regular in spring and summer, especially when grown in a pot, keeping the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged. During the hottest periods it may need more frequent watering. Reduce frequency in autumn and winter, letting the top layer of the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
Humidity: Enjoys some ambient humidity.
Soil/Substrate: Prefers a fertile soil/substrate, rich in organic matter and with good drainage.
Fertilisation: During the growth and flowering period, apply a fertiliser suitable for flowering plants, following the dosage and frequency indicated by the manufacturer. Reduce or suspend fertilisation during winter.
Pruning/Maintenance: It can be pruned in late winter/early spring to control size, encourage branching and maintain a more compact habit. Also remove dry or damaged branches. Removing faded flowers helps keep the plant clean and tidy, and encourages the production of new flowers.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Pet Friendly: There are no sufficiently specific veterinary references to safely confirm the absence of toxicity of Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis for dogs and cats. As a precaution, pets should be prevented from ingesting the plant.
Fun fact: Hibiscus flowers have a very short lifespan, usually only one or two days, but they can follow one another continuously during the flowering season, allowing a healthy plant to stay in bloom for quite some time.
