The project, designed by architect Frederico Valsassina, preserves the original facades of the four buildings in the factory complex, proposing a careful conversion that integrates areas for teaching, leisure, sports and socialising, from pre-school to secondary education.

A renovation project by Frederico Valsassina Arquitectos
Responsible for the architectural design, architect Frederico Valsassina is once again taking on the conversion of a historic space, classified as a monument of public interest, giving it a contemporary approach. Recognised for his balance between form and function, his career has been distinguished with national and international awards, always with a keen eye on the integration of buildings into the urban fabric and the quality of life of their users. In the former “Napolitana”, the challenge was to give new functions to the space, in this case an international school that will have the capacity to accommodate up to 1,200 students, without losing the memory of the place. The result is a school open to the city, with multiple living spaces, from libraries and laboratories to green courtyards, amphitheatres, a cafeteria and sports areas.

A landscaping project by PROAP – Estudos e Projectos de Arquitectura Paisagista
Horto do Campo Grande took on the execution of PROAP’s landscaping project, a landscaping intervention focused on the functionality, sustainability and ecological identity of the space. The solutions adopted were designed to ensure integration with the existing architecture, the creation of differentiated environments, both in private and public areas of the school, and soil permeability. In terms of vegetation, the choice fell on species adapted to local climatic conditions, with low water requirements and reduced maintenance. The diversity of plants used made it possible to structure the outdoor space, creating footpaths, recreation areas, shaded areas and smooth transition zones between the different environments. In line with BREEAM certification requirements, the design introduces native vegetation to promote biodiversity and reduce urban heat islands.

Technical solutions at the service of the environment
PROAP’s project included the installation of an automatic pressurised irrigation system with rain sensors, flow meters and discreet emitters, ensuring efficient water management and promoting the longevity of the planted species. Water distribution, by sprinkler and drip irrigation, was adjusted to the specific needs of each area, maximising resources and respecting the ecological balance.
In terms of outdoor paving, priority was given to the use of permeable materials with green joints, ensuring water infiltration into the soil and helping to combat excessive urban waterproofing. This approach enhances water retention and helps maintain soil moisture levels, complying with BREEAM standards.

A space that teaches by example
More than just a school, Lisboan International School will be a place for experiences, learning and living in dialogue with the population of Alcântara in particular and the city of Lisbon in general.
