All Souls’ Day, also known as the Day of the Faithful Departed or Day of the Dead, is celebrated annually by the Catholic Church on November 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

This celebration evokes the memory and pays tribute to all family members or friends who have passed away, in a visit to the cemeteries, where prayers are also said for their souls. This is a tradition dating back to the 2nd century, in which Christians had the habit of praying for the deceased, with the hope of saving their souls. And in the 11th century, Popes Sylvester II, John XVIII, and Leo IX advised Christians to dedicate one day a year to pray for those who had already passed away. Later, in the 13th century, the date became officially celebrated on November 2 by the Catholic Church, one day after All Saints’ Day.<\/p>\n\n

The tradition continues. On this date, thousands of people fulfill the ritual of visiting cemeteries and bringing flower arrangements as a way to express affection and longing for those who have departed. The most sought-after species for this day are chrysanthemums and roses.<\/p>\n\n

Originating in Asia (China and Japan), the chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum)<\/strong>, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is the flower traditionally used on All Souls’ Day, as it represents life and death. The species is known for its variety of shapes and colors and, while in the West it is associated with death, in the East it symbolizes fidelity, optimism, and joy.<\/p>\n\n

Roses<\/strong> are also commonly used to honor those who are missed. White roses symbolize peace, harmony, and spirituality, while red roses represent courage, respect, and affection.<\/p>\n\n
