Fast-growing and naturally bushy, it develops slightly arching branches and lance-shaped leaves in shades from green to grey-green. The species is native to Tibet and central and southern China.
In summer, it produces many small, fragrant flowers, grouped into showy flower spikes at the tips of the branches. On this specimen, they come in a lovely pink/fuchsia shade, creating a very attractive pop of colour in the garden. The flowers are rich in nectar and especially sought after by butterflies, a trait behind its well-known common name.
Hardy and easy to grow, it adapts well to different soil types as long as they drain well, and does particularly well in sunny spots. It’s an excellent choice for beds, borders, naturalistic-style gardens and pollinator gardens. It can also be grown in a pot, as long as it’s sized appropriately for its growth.

Scientific name: Buddleja davidii
Common names: Buddleia, butterfly bush
Family: Scrophulariaceae
Origin: China and Tibet
Climate: Temperate
Category: Outdoor plant
Approx. height: 40–50 cm
Diâmetro vaso: 19cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers full sun, where it grows more vigorously and flowers more abundantly. It can tolerate some partial shade, but it should get several hours of sun throughout the day to flower at its best.
Temperature: It’s a very hardy plant, cold-tolerant, and once established it can handle harsh winters. Young plants grown in pots are naturally more exposed to temperature swings and benefit from extra protection in extreme conditions.
Watering: Water regularly after planting and while the plant is establishing, as well as during particularly hot, dry spells. Once well established in the ground, it has good drought tolerance. In a pot, check the substrate moisture more often, avoiding both letting it dry out completely for long periods and waterlogging.
Pruning/Maintenance: It benefits from a hard prune in early spring, as Buddleja davidii flowers on new growth. Removing spent flower spikes throughout the season helps keep the plant tidy and can encourage a fresh flush of blooms.
Flowering: Mainly in summer, and it may last longer depending on the climate and growing conditions. The small, fragrant flowers are grouped into terminal flower spikes and are particularly attractive to pollinating insects.
Life cycle: Perennial, deciduous foliage.
Soil: Adapts to different soil types and tolerates a wide pH range, as long as there’s good drainage. In a pot, use a fertile, well-draining substrate.
Fertilising: When grown in a pot, you can apply a slow-release fertiliser or liquid fertiliser during the growth and flowering period, always following the manufacturer’s recommended doses.
Pet Friendly: There aren’t sufficiently solid veterinary references indicating relevant toxicity of Buddleja davidii for dogs and cats. Even so, it’s recommended to avoid pets ingesting ornamental plants, as eating plant material can cause gastrointestinal discomfort in more sensitive animals.

Fun fact: It’s known internationally as “Butterfly Bush” (arbusto-das-borboletas) thanks to the strong ability of its nectar-rich flowers to attract butterflies. That’s why it’s an excellent option if you want to create a garden that’s more supportive of pollinators and biodiversity.

WARNING!
– Representative photograph – the image shown is of an item in stock at the time the product was added to the online catalogue, and is therefore a reference.
