In the Portuguese climate it adapts very well to sunny spots. In pots, during exceptionally hot periods and very intense exposure—especially on terraces or balconies where heat builds up—it’s important to make sure the substrate doesn’t dry out too much.
Temperature: Grows well in our temperate/Mediterranean climate conditions. It tolerates heat better when grown in a well-drained substrate with adequate watering, and it has good cold resistance.
Watering: Moderate, but regular during the hottest periods, especially when grown in pots, where the substrate dries much faster during the Portuguese summer. Let the top layer dry slightly between waterings, without allowing the plant to stay completely dry for long periods. Always avoid waterlogging and don’t leave water sitting in the saucer or in decorative pots without drainage holes, as Gypsophila likes very efficient drainage.
Pruning/Maintenance: Removing dried flowers and flower stems helps keep the plant tidy and can encourage continued flowering. If it loses its compact shape after a first intense bloom, it can be lightly trimmed to stimulate new growth.
Flowering: In Mediterranean conditions, it flowers mainly from spring to summer, and may extend flowering into early autumn, depending on the variety, exposure, temperature and water availability. Excessive heat or dry spells can temporarily reduce flowering.
Soil: Prefers light, loose, very well-drained soils, adapting particularly well to neutral to alkaline substrates. In pots, it’s essential to ensure good drainage, especially during the wetter months, avoiding heavy or permanently waterlogged substrates.
Fertilising: During the growth and flowering period, you can apply a flowering-plant fertiliser in moderation. Avoid excessive fertilising, especially nitrogen-rich feeds, which can promote foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
Pet Friendly: The ASPCA specifically lists Gypsophila elegans as non-toxic to dogs and cats, although it notes that ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhoea. Gypsophila sp. isn’t mentioned, so as a precaution we recommend preventing pets from ingesting this plant.

Fun fact: Gypsophila is widely used as a cut flower and is known internationally as “Baby’s Breath”, thanks to the light, delicate effect created by its countless small flowers. That same feature also makes it very interesting in the garden or in planters to create contrast with plants that have larger flowers.

AVAILABLE COLOURS
– This item is available with white or pink flowers. One plant will be sent in one of the available colours, according to stock at the time your order is prepared.
– If you have a colour preference, you can note it in the “Notes” field on the purchase form.
