Heather (Calluna sp<\/em>.) is a small evergreen perennial shrub with persistent foliage, highly ornamental, combining a delicate appearance with the rustic, natural character typical of heathers. Its small flowers appear abundantly along the stems and can display different shades of white, pink, lilac or purple, creating interesting splashes of colour in the garden.
Low-growing and compact, it’s an excellent choice for pots and planters, borders, ground cover and Rock Gardens, pairing particularly well with other shrubs and acid-loving plants. Its flowers are also highly sought after by bees and other pollinating insects, contributing to a livelier, more biodiverse garden.<\/p>\n

CUIDADOS<\/strong>
Light<\/strong>: Prefers locations with plenty of light and a few hours of direct sun, especially during the morning. In Portugal, in regions with hot, dry summers, it should be protected from the most intense sun during the hottest hours, especially when grown in a pot. Tolerates bright partial shade, although too much shade may reduce flowering.
Temperature<\/strong>: Tolerates cold well, although hardiness may vary depending on the species\/cultivar. When grown in a pot, it should be protected from particularly intense and prolonged cold or frost conditions.
Watering<\/strong>: Regular, especially when grown in a pot, keeping the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged. Avoid letting the root ball dry out completely for prolonged periods. In the Portuguese summer, check substrate moisture more frequently, especially in pots exposed to the sun.
Soil\/Substrate<\/strong>: Requires acidic, well-drained substrate, preferably rich in organic matter. In pots, use substrate suitable for acid-loving plants, such as that used for azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Avoid calcareous or markedly alkaline soils.
Fertilisation<\/strong>: Not very demanding when grown in suitable substrate. In pots, a fertiliser for acid-loving plants may be applied during spring, always respecting the dosage indicated by the manufacturer. Pruning\/Maintenance<\/strong>: After flowering, you can lightly trim the stems to remove spent flowers, keep the plant compact and encourage branching. Avoid overly severe pruning into old wood.
Flowering<\/strong>: Abundant and prolonged, occurring between summer and autumn and extending through the colder months in certain cultivars. The timing, duration and colour of flowering vary depending on the specimen\/cultivar.

Fun facts<\/strong>: Many people call Calluna “Erica”, especially commercially \u2014 and it’s easy to see why: they’re very similar plants, belong to the same family (Ericaceae<\/em>) and both are commonly called Heathers. But botanically, Calluna and Erica are different genera.
Heathers are nectar-producing plants, highly sought after by bees during flowering. They’re closely associated with natural heathland landscapes and poor, acidic soils, making them very interesting for creating naturalistic-looking gardens that are favourable to pollinators.<\/p>\n
