Melaleuca (Melaleuca sp<\/em>.) is an evergreen shrub or small tree with an elegant, slightly informal habit, characterised by fine branches and narrow, delicate foliage that give it a light, natural appearance.
Native primarily to Australia and the Pacific region, it’s a particularly interesting plant for Mediterranean gardens and coastal areas, thanks to its excellent adaptation to sun, heat, and maritime conditions. Once well established it shows good drought resistance, making it an interesting choice for low-maintenance gardens.
It can be grown as a specimen, in groups, or used to form hedges and plant screens, responding very well to pruning and allowing easy control of its shape and size.<\/p>\n

CUIDADOS<\/strong>
Light<\/strong>: Prefers very bright, sunny locations. In Portugal it adapts well to direct sun, including in regions with hot summers, provided the plant is properly established and has sufficient water during that phase.
Temperature<\/strong>: Very heat-resistant. Tolerance to cold and frost varies considerably between Melaleuca species. In regions subject to severe or prolonged frosts, it should be grown in a sheltered location.
Watering<\/strong>: Water regularly during the establishment period, allowing the plant to develop a good root system. Once well established, watering can be gradually reduced, showing good resistance to dry periods. In pots it naturally requires more regular watering during the hot periods of the Portuguese summer. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Soil\/Compost<\/strong>: Adaptable to different soil types, but prefers well-drained soils. In pots, use a quality compost with good drainage capacity.
Fertilisation<\/strong>: Not very demanding. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring, avoiding excessive feeding.
Pruning\/Maintenance<\/strong>: Tolerates pruning very well, making it possible to train it as a shrub, small tree, or hedge. Regular pruning helps achieve a more compact, branched plant. When used as a hedge, it’s advisable to begin shaping while the plant is still young.
Flowering<\/strong>: Depending on the species, it produces small clustered flowers, often in white or cream tones. The timing and characteristics of flowering vary according to the species.
Life cycle<\/strong>: Perennial with persistent foliage.
Not Pet Friendly<\/strong>: There is documented toxicity associated with concentrated Melaleuca essential oil (tea tree oil) in dogs and cats, but this should not be automatically extrapolated to simple contact with the living plant. As a precaution, prevent pets from ingesting the plant.<\/p>\n

Interesting fact<\/strong>: The genus Melaleuca <\/em>includes numerous Australian species known as Tea Trees<\/em> or Paperbarks<\/em>. Some develop a characteristic pale bark resembling sheets of paper, while others are grown for their ornamental habit, foliage, or flowering.<\/p>\n
