Kanuma is a mineral substrate of volcanic origin from the Japanese region of Kanuma, world-renowned for azalea cultivation. With a naturally acidic pH, it is the substrate of choice for growing azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias and other acidophilic species, both in bonsai and in pots.
Its light and porous structure provides an excellent combination of drainage, root aeration and moisture retention, creating ideal conditions for healthy root development. Unlike other acidifying materials such as peat, Kanuma maintains its acidic characteristics for long periods, helping to preserve substrate pH stability between repottings.
