You’ll often see them further south in Portugal, and it’s simply irresistible how they beautify walls, pergolas, and arches. Thanks to their intense flowering and vibrant colours (although the most common colour is pink/purple, it’s also common to find red, white, or orange varieties), they stand out, creating striking Mediterranean-style effects. The floral bracts cluster at the tips of the branches from early spring through winter, so having a bougainvillea in your garden or terrace means colour for much of the year. It can be used as a shrub, a climber, or in hedging, but once planted in the ground and well established, it will need frequent pruning to control the excessive growth of its strong, thorny branches. It can reach 5 to 10 m in height and, to grow as a climber, it needs a support structure.

Scientific name: Bougainvillea sp.
Common names: Buganvília, Ceboleiro, Flor-de-papel, Pataguinha, Pau-de-roseira, Roseiro, Roseta, Santa-rita, Sempre-lustrosa, Três-marias
Family: Nyctaginaceae
Origin: South America (Brazil)
Climate: Tropical, subtropical
Category: Outdoor plants
Approx. height: 1 m
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Direct sunlight. It loves full sun and prefers a south-facing position (shady areas or north-facing spots will reduce flowering).
Temperature: It doesn’t tolerate very low temperatures (if you live in an area with cold winters, protect the plant with plastic or move it to a greenhouse).
Watering: Moderate, avoid waterlogging. As temperatures drop, you’ll need to space out watering; in warmer periods, only water when the soil is completely dry.
Soil: Fertile and well-draining. It’s not very demanding, although it prefers loose, fertile soil/substrate that doesn’t retain excess water.
Fertilising: During the flowering season, add liquid or granular fertiliser to the watering water once a week.
Pruning: Frequently, to control fast growth.
Not Pet Friendly: Not a pet-safe plant.

WARNING!
