It naturally forms a compact, rounded mound, covered in finely cut grey-silver leaves, making it an excellent choice if you’re looking for more sustainable, lower-water gardens, or to create harmonious contrasts alongside green foliage and colourful blooms. In spring and summer it produces small yellow button-like flowers, held above the foliage on slender flower stems, attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Extremely resistant to drought, heat and sea spray, it adapts perfectly to beds, borders, slopes, pots and planters. Thanks to its hardiness and low watering needs, it’s also a top choice for Rock Gardens (stone gardens) and Xero Gardens, where its silvery foliage helps create texture, contrast and brightness all year round. It’s perfectly adapted to the Portuguese climate, needing only good sun exposure and well-drained soil to thrive. A discreet beauty— that touch of rustic charm that can’t be missing from any Mediterranean garden, stone garden (Rock Garden) or Xerojardim (Xero Garden), where its drought resistance and silvery foliage help create sustainable, elegant spaces where low maintenance is the watchword!

Scientific name: Santolina chamaecyparissus
Common names: Grey Santolina, Santolina, Abrótano-fêmea
Family: Asteraceae
Origin: Mediterranean Region
Climate: Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 30-40cm
Diâmetro vaso: 19cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Needs full sun, where it develops more compact, intensely silvery foliage. It tolerates light partial shade, but flowering and plant density may be reduced.
Watering: Very moderate. Once established, it has high drought tolerance. In a pot, water when the surface of the substrate is dry. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
Temperature: Adapts very well to the Portuguese climate, tolerating high summer temperatures and light frosts in winter.
Fertilising: Not demanding. One application of a balanced fertiliser in spring is enough to promote healthy growth.
Pruning: Benefits from light pruning after flowering to keep a compact shape and encourage foliage renewal. Avoid severe cuts into very old wood.
Soil: Prefers poor to moderately fertile soils, as long as they have excellent drainage. It does particularly well in sandy or stony ground, making it a perfect choice for Mediterranean Gardens, Rock Gardens and Xero Gardens—an excellent option for low-water landscaping projects with high heat resistance.
Pet Friendly: Generally considered safe for pets. Even so, like any ornamental plant, it’s recommended to avoid ingesting large quantities.

WARNING!
