The flowers, in violet, blue or white, form pendulous clusters 15 to 30cm long and give off a sweet and very pleasant fragrance. These flowers appear before the leaves emerge, providing a striking visual display. The leaves are composed of 9 to 13 oblong leaflets, bright green in colour. The fruits are flattened pods, 5 to 10cm long, that remain on the plant during winter. It’s an interesting choice for pergolas or garden walls, although, being deciduous, it loses its foliage and beauty during the coldest months of the year. However, in the warmer months, it provides beauty (and shade, if mature and supported on a pergola-type structure) to any garden or terrace.

Scientific name: Wisteria sinensis
Common names: Wisteria, Chinese Wisteria
Family: Fabaceae
Origin: China
Climate: Temperate
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 50-60cm
Pot diameter/volume: 16cm (2Lt)

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with good sun exposure, although it tolerates partial shade. Flowering is more abundant when grown in full sun.
Temperature: Cold resistant, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C.
Watering: Needs regular watering during the active growth period (spring and summer), keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. In winter, watering frequency can be reduced.
Humidity: Appreciates soil with moderate moisture, avoiding waterlogging.
Fertilisation: Apply phosphorus-rich fertiliser in early spring to stimulate flowering.
Pruning: Requires regular pruning to control growth and promote flowering. Pruning should be done in summer, after flowering, and again in winter, reducing lateral branches to about 5cm.
Soil: Substrate rich in organic matter, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral.
Not Pet-Friendly: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested by pets or humans, and may cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Fun fact: Wisteria sinensis is often used to cover pergolas, walls and other garden structures, thanks to its vigorous growth and exuberant flowering. In the city of Sierra Madre, California, there’s a specimen planted in 1892 that’s considered one of the largest wisterias in the world, covering a significant area and producing millions of flowers during flowering.

WARNING!
