It produces elegant, drooping clusters of small blue, violet, or white flowers that bloom during spring and summer, attracting bees and butterflies. The contrast between the lush violet blooms and green foliage creates a high-impact visual display, making this plant an excellent choice for adding life and colour to gardens, balconies, patios, and other sunny outdoor spaces.
After flowering, ornamental golden-yellow berries develop, creating a beautiful contrast with the foliage. Despite their high decorative value, these berries are toxic if ingested and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
It’s an easy-to-grow plant, very heat-resistant and well-adapted to the Portuguese climate. It tolerates intense sun and short periods of drought once established. Thanks to its fast growth and excellent response to pruning, it’s often used in gardens, hedges, and flower beds, as well as in pots to decorate terraces, balconies, and patios.

Scientific name: Duranta repens (syn. Duranta erecta)
Common names: Duranta, Blue Duranta, Skyflower
Family: Verbenaceae
Origin: Central America, Caribbean, and tropical South America
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 65-100cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Full sun. It tolerates partial shade, though it flowers more abundantly in very bright spots.
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 18 and 30°C. It handles heat well. Sensitive to heavy frost; protection is recommended when temperatures drop below 0°C.
Watering: Regular to moderate during warmer months, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established it shows good drought resistance. During winter, when grown in the ground, rainfall is usually sufficient. If grown in a pot or planter, avoid letting water sit in saucers or pots without drainage holes, as excess moisture (from watering or rain) can cause root rot.
Humidity: It’s not demanding regarding ambient humidity, adapting well to the Mediterranean climate.
Fertilisation: Apply outdoor flowering plant fertiliser during spring and summer to stimulate blooming and growth, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Pruning: Tolerates pruning very well. It can be pruned in late winter or after flowering to control its size, stimulate new blooms, and maintain a dense canopy.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil/substrate rich in organic matter. It adapts to various soil types as long as they don’t remain waterlogged.
Life cycle: Perennial plant.
Not Pet Friendly: All parts of the plant, especially the fruit, are toxic if ingested by people or pets.

WARNING!
