The fruit changes color as it ripens, turning from green to its characteristic blue. Planting should be done in winter (it’s perfectly possible to grow blueberries in deep pots or planters using acidic substrate on a balcony or terrace). Harvest time can vary slightly, but usually occurs from April to September. Blueberries can be eaten fresh, added to cereal, yogurt, smoothies, and pancakes, or used to make jams.

Scientific name: Vaccinium corymbosum
Common names: Blueberry
Family: Ericaceae
Origin: Europe and North America
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 60cm
Diameter: 14cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Thrives in full sun or partial shade (direct morning or afternoon sun).
Temperature: Withstands temperatures down to –30 °C, ideal for cold climates with distinct winters.
Watering: Prefers slightly moist but well-drained soil. Keep the top of the substrate slightly moist, especially in warmer months, as it doesn’t tolerate dry spells well. In summer, a good watering technique is to place water in a saucer and let the plant absorb it all, refilling only when the saucer is completely dry. However, be careful not to overwater to avoid root rot (and remove the saucer in winter because rain will cause water to stagnate and lead to waterlogging).
Pruning: Blueberry bushes should be pruned every year; the best time is in winter during the dormant phase. For a better harvest, remove all dry branches and clear useless twigs from the center of the plant to promote airflow and light penetration.
Soil: Rich in organic matter, well-drained, with an acidic pH (use substrate for acidophilic plants).
Not Pet Friendly: The plant’s leaves are toxic to pets (although the fruit – blueberries – is safe).

Fun Fact: Blueberries are high in antioxidants, helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, tumors, nervous system disorders, and aging-related processes.

WARNING!
