It’s well known for its stems, whose pattern resembles a zebra’s body (hence its common name). Its slender striped petioles and glossy dark green arrow-shaped leaves transport you to the heart of a tropical rainforest. As a tropical native, it’s quite sensitive to winter and low temperatures. In our climate, it prefers being indoors and may still enter dormancy, losing some leaves during the colder months, only to return with larger leaves than ever the following spring and summer.

Scientific name: Alocasia zebrina
Common names: Elephant Ear, Zebra Alocasia
Family: Araceae
Origin: Southeast Asia
Climate: Tropical to subtropical
Category: Indoor plant (can be kept outdoors, as long as it’s protected from extreme temperatures and wind)
Approximate height: 100cm
Pot diameter: 24cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers plenty of indirect light or partial shade (direct sun ideally only in the early morning).
Temperature: Ideally around 18-22ºC.
Watering: Keep the substrate consistently slightly moist. In winter, reduce slightly but don’t let the soil dry out completely, especially in the bottom third.
Humidity: Needs higher humidity than usual (60–80%).
