In its natural habitat, it can reach 4 to 15m, while in a pot it usually stays more compact. It’s easy to care for, pet-friendly, and—in our mild climate—thrives indoors or out, withstanding moderate drought thanks to its water-storing trunk. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for an exotic, unique, and eye-catching plant for indoors, a terrace, garden, or balcony, as it requires very little maintenance.

Scientific name: Beaucarnea recurvata
Common names: Ponytail Palm, Elephant’s Foot, Nolina
Family: Asparagaceae
Origin: Eastern Mexico, in the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí
Climate: Tropical and Subtropical
Category: Indoor (or outdoor) plant
Approximate height: 100cm
Bowl diameter: 25cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright spots. Direct sun is best in the morning (protect it from full sun during the hottest hours). It will also thrive in areas with plenty of indirect light.
Temperature: Ideally between 20°C and 25°C. It doesn’t tolerate temperatures below 10°C; in colder climates, keep it indoors or in a greenhouse during winter.
Watering: Due to its ability to store water in its trunk, it needs infrequent/moderate watering. Letting the soil dry out completely (not just the surface) between waterings is always best. When in doubt, it’s better not to water. Wait a week and water then—it can take it! Make sure no water sits in the saucer or decorative pot to prevent root rot.
Fertilizing: During spring and summer, apply a cactus and succulent fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
Pruning: Generally not necessary. Simply remove dry or damaged leaves to keep it looking its best.
Soil: Well-drained, light, and sandy. A mix of potting soil with sand or gravel is recommended to avoid excess moisture. Cactus and succulent potting mix is also a great solution.
Pet Friendly: Beaucarnea recurvata is safe for pets.

Fun Fact: Due to its slow growth and longevity, the Ponytail Palm can live for decades, making it a plant that can stay with families for generations.

WARNING!
