It’s actually an epiphytic fern (meaning that in its natural habitat it grows supported on other plants, trees, or rocks). Its creeping rhizome grows along the surface (spilling out of pots and staying visible, as you can see in the photo) and is covered in scales and white or cream-coloured hairs. These silky aerial roots are soft to the touch and give the plant its common name, “Rabbit’s Foot Fern”. It’s also these roots that give this fern its absolutely unusual look. And besides its looks, it’s non-toxic to pets. But that’s not all: if you’re superstitious and you’ve got Rue, a Snake Plant, a ZZ Plant, a Protective Eye, or a Horseshoe at your front door… then add a Davallia tyermannii to your collection of good-luck charms too. Better safe than sorry—and this plant is strongly associated with good luck in Feng Shui.

Scientific name: Davallia tyermanni
Common names: Rabbit’s Foot Fern, Portuguese Lace Fern, White Rabbit’s Foot Fern, White Hare’s Foot Fern
Family: Davalliaceae
Origin: South and Southeast China
Category: Indoor plant
Altura aproximada: 30cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Bright, indirect moderate light or partial shade (direct sun only in the early morning)
Temperature: Prefers humid environments; adapts well to bathrooms or kitchens; ideal temperature 16–24ºC. Avoid cold drafts.
Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist (top layer) between waterings. But watch out for waterlogging. Too much water rots the roots and rhizomes. Always remove standing water from saucers and avoid soaking the aerial roots too much. You should also water with room-temperature water and, ideally, use non-limescale tap water, such as rainwater or demineralised water. Or leave tap water out for 72 hr so the components that can affect the plant (chlorine, etc.) evaporate, and then you can use it for watering.
Humidity: As a fern, it will thrive in an environment with higher relative humidity. Misting the foliage and rhizomes with room-temperature water can help improve humidity levels indoors.
Fertilising: Encourage growth during its growing phase, typically spring–summer, with fertilisers suitable for green plants, following the instructions on the product label.
Pruning: To encourage growth, you can prune regularly, although there’s no need to prune the foliage. Only remove dry fronds with clean, sharp pruning scissors.
Life cycle: Perennial.
Pet Friendly: A pet-safe plant.

Fun fact: Davallia was named in honour of Swiss botanist Edmond Davall (1763–1798), known for his research on ferns.
