Its rigid green leaves, which usually don’t exceed 80cm in height and are sword-shaped (hence its common name), with horizontal patterns, can vary in lighter/darker shades. The difference from the “Saint Barbara’s Sword” is that this one doesn’t have the yellow border around the leaves. This specimen is fabulous due to the height of its leaves: they reach 1.25m!
Like all Sansevierias, it’s ideal if you don’t have much time or experience caring for plants, as it’s almost impossible for it not to survive indoors, since it tolerates tough conditions like long dry spells, temperature changes, or lower-light spaces. It’s also the ideal plant for indoor environments because it belongs to the group of “air purifiers”, meaning it helps remove toxins from the air (such as formaldehyde and benzene) and improve relative humidity. As with other Sansevierias, it grows slowly, and a sign of dryness/lack of water is “wrinkles” (dehydration ridges) appearing on the leaves, which also start to look drier—much like human skin would. In this case, simply increase the amount or frequency of watering, always allowing the water to drain after watering and ensuring the soil dries well between each watering.

Scientific name: Sansevieria zeylanica
Common names: Snake Plant, Mother-in-law’s Tongue
Family: Asparagaceae
Origin: Tropical regions of Africa (Nigeria, Congo, Kenya, Tanzania) and parts of Asia (India, Sri Lanka)
Climate: Tropical, subtropical
Category: Indoor plant
Approximate height: 1.25m
Pot diameter: 25cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright indirect light, but tolerates low-light conditions. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn. If placed in a darker spot, the leaves will tend to become darker.
Temperature: Ideal between 18°C and 27°C (avoid temperatures below 10°C)
Watering: Water when the substrate is completely dry. Don’t leave standing water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage holes.
Humidity: Adapts well to low-humidity environments. Doesn’t require regular misting but cleaning the leaves with a damp cloth is recommended to keep the plant beautiful and healthy.
Fertilization: Apply during spring and summer.
Pruning: Remove damaged or dry leaves at the base with clean scissors. Avoid cutting leaf tips, as they don’t regenerate.
Soil: Light and well-draining substrate, preferably sandy (for cacti and succulents will be ideal). Avoid soils that retain too much moisture.
Not Pet Friendly: Toxic to pets if ingested, may cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Fun fact: In the Yoruba culture of Nigeria, Sansevieria zeylanica is considered a sacred plant, associated with protection and good luck. In Portugal, it’s also strongly associated with protection and luck, so it’s often placed by the entrance to homes.

WARNING!
