With relatively fast growth and a look that blends naturalness and elegance, Salvia farinacea has glossy green leaves and produces delicate, long-lasting flower spikes in white or blue/purple – this one is Purple/Violet – that no one can ignore. They attract bees and butterflies, promoting biodiversity, and it’s an excellent plant for garden beds and borders, or pots and planters on balconies and terraces. It can reach 1.5m when grown in the ground in sunny locations with good drainage, but usually doesn’t exceed 90cm and is an extremely ornamental plant due to the flowering it produces from early spring until autumn. It’s undemanding, well adapted to our climate (particularly southern Portugal), requiring only a few hours of direct sun per day, quite moderate watering (especially if not in a pot) and soil/substrate with good drainage. Add Salvia farinacea to your basket and enjoy the simple and elegant beauty of this incredible plant!

Scientific name: Salvia farinacea
Common names: Salvia
Família: Lamiaceae
Origin: South America
Climate: Subtropical
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 60cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with good sun exposure, adapting to full sun or partial shade. In very hot regions, it’s best to provide some shade during the strongest hours of sun.
Watering: Moderate, especially if not in a pot and already well rooted. In summer and during flowering, watering should be more frequent. In winter, reduce frequency or let nature (rain) take care of it, except during dry periods. If in a pot/planter, watch out for standing water in saucers or decorative pots without drainage!
Temperature: Given its origin, it prefers mild to warm temperatures. It tolerates heat and dry temperatures better than extreme cold. Therefore, it won’t tolerate freezing temperatures or frost well, so it will benefit from some shelter during the coldest months of the year, in cold snaps, or areas with less mild temperatures.
Fertilization: Apply balanced fertilizer during spring and summer to stimulate growth and flowering.
Pruning: Carry out formative and cleaning pruning, removing dead/damaged branches and wilted flowers to keep the plant healthy and promote flowering.
Soil: Not demanding, tolerates all soil types, as long as they have good drainage.
Pet Friendly: Considered a safe plant for pets.

Fun fact: Belongs to the same family as some aromatic plants – like mint, rosemary and basil. Plants in this family usually have aromatic leaves, square stems and flowers very attractive to pollinators, just like Salvia farinacea has!

WARNING!
