It has a spindle-like shape with longitudinal grooves that give it a wrinkled appearance after frying. Its flowering is abundant and the fruits are harvested while still unripe. It has a predominantly sweet flavour, but about 10% of the fruits are spicy. The intensity of the heat is unpredictable until they are eaten, making them a unique gastronomic experience and this is precisely what gave rise to the popular Galician saying: “Padrón peppers, some are hot and some are not”. It is a plant that enjoys temperate to warm climates, so it will do very well in our country, only requiring cultivation in a suitable spot (needs plenty of direct sun) and ensuring it doesn’t lack water, especially after planting and until it gains some size. The flowering season usually occurs between August and September. Try cooking them with olive oil and coarse salt, they’re delicious!

Scientific name: Capsicum annuum L.
Common name: Padrón Pepper
Family: Solanaceae
Origin: Central America
Climate: Tropical, Subtropical, Temperate
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 55-60cm
Pot diameter/volume: 12cm (1L)

CUIDADOS
Light: Requires full sun, ideally 6 to 8 hours of direct light per day. In partial shade, flowering and development may be compromised.
Temperature: It is a plant sensitive to low temperatures and frost, and should be protected during the colder months. It develops well with temperatures between 20-25ºC.
Watering: Regular and consistent to keep the soil moist, but never waterlogged. The goal is to avoid water fluctuations, which can cause flowers and fruits to drop, as well as increase the risk of root rot. Watch out for saucers with standing water or decorative pots without drainage holes! It is best to grow in well-draining soil, as excess moisture in the soil or on the leaves can encourage fungal diseases.
Pruning: Generally does not require pruning, simply remove damaged branches or leaves to promote aeration and keep the plant healthy.
Life cycle: Usually grown as an annual.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, deep soils rich in organic matter.
Fertilisation: Fertilise with compounds rich in phosphorus and potassium to encourage fruiting. Opting for organic/Bio products suitable for vegetables is always a good choice.
Not Pet Friendly: Contains capsaicin, especially in the fruits. Can irritate or cause discomfort if ingested by animals.

WARNING! Representative photo – the image shown is of a stock item at the time of cataloging and serves as a reference.
