It usually reaches between 30 and 100cm in height, although some subspecies can grow up to 2m. The stems are highly branched and the leaves are greyish-green, ending in spikes that display a tuft of bracts at the tip in shades of violet, purple and sometimes slightly blue. These striking violet or purple bracts resemble “rabbit ears” or “butterfly wings” (hence one of its common names), making it one of the best-known Lavender species. It is easily found in central and southern Portugal, adding wonderful tufts of violet to woodlands or more arid terrain from March to September, during its flowering season. Beyond its ornamental value, it’s widely used in aromatherapy and perfumery and is a melliferous plant, attracting bees and butterflies, making it ideal for pollinator gardens and vegetable patches.

Scientific name: Lavandula stoechas
Common names: Lavender, Spanish Lavender, French Lavender, Butterfly Lavender
Family: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean region (including Portugal, Spain, France, Macaronesia)
Climate: Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 35cm
Pot diameter: 23cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Loves full sun. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for abundant flowering.
Temperature: Adapted to hot, dry climates. It’s more sensitive to cold than other lavender species but can withstand low temperatures and enjoys full sun.
Watering: Only requires watering during prolonged dry spells;
Humidity: Prefers dry environments. Cannot tolerate waterlogging or excessive humidity.
Soil: Well-drained soil is essential to prevent root rot. Tolerates poor or loamy soils, preferably alkaline or neutral, with excellent
drainage (sandy or stony). Tolerates calcareous soils as long as they drain well.
Fertilization: Requires little fertilization. Fertilize moderately only in spring and summer, avoiding excessive fertilization that may affect
flowering.
Pruning: Important to do after flowering or at the end of winter to prevent the center of the plant from becoming woody and to maintain a dense and
floriferous shape.
Life cycle: Perennial in mild climates.
Not Pet Friendly: Contains aromatic compounds (such as coumarins) that can be toxic if ingested.

Fun fact: In Portuguese culture, French Lavender was used in processions to scent the ground and in the bonfires of the Popular Saints festivals.

WARNING!
