Native to US wetlands, it’s becoming rare in the wild. The leaves are made up of 2 lobes with small spines along the edges, and the big fascination of this plant is its active trapping mechanism: the insect is attracted by nectar and, when it lands on the leaves, the “jaws” close and digestion begins, with the nectar digesting the insect over several days. Like other carnivorous plants, it doesn’t tolerate pollution well. To thrive, this plant needs lots of direct sunlight and, as these plants evolved in wet, low-nutrient soil, watering with rainwater is always the best option. Don’t forget that Venus flytraps go dormant in winter, especially in low temperatures! In other words, for the plant to grow healthily, it’s important to make sure it spends its rest period somewhere where temperatures change throughout the year, as they would in nature. It can be kept indoors, but it will only survive if placed somewhere with lots of direct sun or strong artificial light, with good ventilation and away from air heating/cooling systems.

Scientific name: Dionaea muscipula
Common name: Venus Flytrap
Family: Droseraceae
Origin: North America (indirect origin, as it’s a hybrid created in cultivation)
Category: Outdoor or indoor plant
Approx. height: 10–15 cm
Pot diameter: 9 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Plenty of direct light; at least 4 hours of direct sun per day is ideal, avoiding exposure during the hottest hours in the warmest months of the year. Without enough light, the traps (leaf lobes with spines) tend to shrink, weaken, and lose colour.
Watering: During summer—the growing season—keep the pot sitting in 1 cm of water, never letting the substrate dry out, and avoid watering from above. This is essential, as the idea is to recreate swamp conditions as closely as possible! And watering with rainwater is ideal. Alternatively, you can water with distilled water. AVOID watering with TAP WATER or MINERAL WATER, as the mineral salts they contain will kill the plant.
Soil: Peat-rich substrate and always moist (the best substrate for carnivorous plants is sphagnum).
Fertilising: It’s carnivorous, it doesn’t need it!
Pruning: Remove only dark/dry leaves to keep it looking good and healthy, taking great care to touch the leaves as little as possible.
Pet Friendly: Considered a safe plant for pets.

Fun facts: The rest/dormancy period lasts 3 to 4 months, and during that time you should keep it somewhere with temperatures between 0 and 10°C, as it would be in nature. It’s normal for some leaves to die during this phase, but the plant recovers in spring. “Playing” with the traps—touching them with your finger to see if they close—is a common mistake because it wastes the plant’s energy.

WARNING!
