In favourable conditions, it can reach 30 to 80 cm in height. It produces fragrant flower spikes typical of lavenders, usually in lilac to purple tones, gathered in inflorescences at the end of long, leafless stems. It’s a plant very well adapted to Portugal’s climate, flowering mainly between June and August, and is ideal for mass planting in beds and borders. Its scent also supports biodiversity in your green space by attracting pollinators and bees.

Scientific name: Lavandula angustifolia
Common names: True lavender, English lavender, Lavender (in Portugal)
Família: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean Region
Climate: Mediterranean (hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters)
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 45-50cm
Diâmetro vaso: 19cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Needs full sun to flower abundantly. Shade significantly reduces flowering and can weaken the plant.
Temperature: Tolerant of moderate frost. However, it prefers climates with hot, dry summers and cool winters.
Watering: Very drought-tolerant: water only when the soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging, which causes root rot.
Humidity: Prefers dry to moderately moist soils, as long as they’re well-drained. Overly humid environments encourage fungal diseases.
Fertilising: Not demanding—generally doesn’t need fertiliser in good, well-drained soils. To encourage flowering, apply a balanced, phosphorus-rich fertiliser in spring.
Pruning: Important to keep a compact shape and promote flowering. Prune lightly, cutting back about one third of new growth in spring, keeping some green foliage at the base. After flowering, remove dried flower stems. Every 3 years, do a harder prune close to ground level to renew plantings.
Life cycle: Perennial. It stays alive for several years in favourable conditions, keeping its characteristic foliage, flowers and scent.
Soil: Prefers light, well-drained substrates with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; adapts well to poor and even stony soils.
Not Pet Friendly: Although not highly toxic, the flowers and oils can cause reactions in sensitive animals.

Fun fact: Famous for its essential oil (rich in linalool and linalyl acetate), widely used in perfumery, aromatherapy, soap-making and cosmetics. The dried flowers are used in potpourris and to repel insects. The plant is also melliferous and valued in beekeeping.

WARNING!
