Relatively fast-growing and with a rustic charm, this plant is the right choice for Mediterranean-style gardens, adapting well to our climate and looking great in beds, pots or planters. It flowers mainly from spring to autumn, attracting butterflies and other pollinators. Hardy and fairly easy to care for, Solanum rantonettii needs sunny spots and, in colder areas, may partially lose its foliage in winter, bouncing back vigorously the following spring.

Scientific name: Solanum rantonettii
Common names: Blue Solanum, Blue Jasmine, Blue solanum
Family: Solanaceae
Origin: South America
Category: Outdoor plant
Approx. height: 60–90 cm
Pot diameter: 19 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Needs to be placed/grown in spots with plenty of direct sunlight to encourage flowering. Tolerates partial shade (direct sun in the morning or afternoon), though it may produce fewer flowers.
Watering: Moderate and regular, especially in the hottest months of the year. Avoid waterlogging. If you keep it in a pot, watch out for saucers or decorative cachepots without drainage holes, where water can stagnate and cause root rot.
Humidity: Likes moderately humid environments, but adapts well to our climate in mainland Portugal. During periods of intense heat it may benefit from more frequent watering.
Soil: Grows best in fertile, organic matter-rich soil, with a slightly acidic pH and good drainage.
Pruning: Light pruning is recommended at the end of winter or after flowering to encourage new shoots and keep a compact, balanced shape.
Fertilising: Apply fertiliser for outdoor flowering plants during spring and summer.
Not pet-friendly: May be toxic to pets.

Fun fact: Despite the common name “Blue Jasmine”, this plant doesn’t belong to the true jasmine family. Its standout feature is the blue-purple flowers that bloom for several consecutive months, making it very popular in ornamental gardens.

WARNING!
