Its heart-shaped leaves have a deeply rippled surface in an intense green tone, creating an elegant, sophisticated ornamental effect. Compact and slow-growing, it’s an excellent choice for decorating desks, shelves, side tables, kitchens and other indoor spaces with little natural light. Throughout the year it may produce curious whitish, spike-shaped flower stalks that rise above the foliage and contrast with its compact habit. Easy to care for and adaptable to different indoor environments, it’s an ideal plant for both beginners and tropical plant collectors. Its tolerance of low light and low water needs make it one of the most versatile and easiest houseplants to keep.

Scientific name: Peperomia caperata
Common names: Peperomia, Ripple peperomia, Rat-tail
Family: Piperaceae
Origin: Brazil
Climate: Tropical and subtropical
Category: Indoor plants
Approximate height: 35cm
Pot diameter: 17 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light, but easily adapts to lower-light environments. Avoid direct sun exposure, especially during the strongest hours, as it can scorch the leaves. Faded or yellowing leaves may indicate too much light.
Watering: Moderate. Its semi-succulent leaves store some water, so let the potting mix dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency and always check that the top layer of the potting mix is dry before watering again.
Temperature: It doesn’t tolerate intense cold, so in our climate it will do best indoors or in greenhouses. It grows best between 18°C and 26°C. It doesn’t tolerate frost or temperatures below 10°C for prolonged periods. Keep it away from cold draughts and direct sources of heating or air conditioning.
Fertilising: Apply fertiliser for green plants or houseplants once a month in spring and summer, following the manufacturer’s recommended doses.
Pruning: It doesn’t need regular pruning. Only remove dry or damaged leaves, or old flower stalks, to keep it looking healthy and compact.
Soil: Fertile, light, well-draining potting mix. A quality all-purpose potting mix enriched with perlite or another drainage material is an excellent option.
Pet Friendly: Peperomia caperata is considered safe for dogs and cats, making it a great choice for homes with pets.

Fun facts: It belongs to the same family as black pepper (Piper nigrum); It’s often used in terrariums thanks to its compact size and preference for humid environments.

WARNING!
