Its small, colourful flowers open during the day, especially around 11 a.m. (hence one of its common names), and close in the late afternoon or on cloudy days — a phenomenon known as “nyctinasty”. Flower colours range from yellow, pink, orange and white, making it an excellent choice to brighten up gardens, borders or hanging baskets. It’s an easy-care plant with great visual impact.

Scientific name: Portulaca umbraticola
Common names: Ornamental purslane, Eleven o’clock, Ornamental purslane, Mouse-love
Family: Portulacaceae
Origin: South America (especially Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay)
Climate: Tropical to subtropical
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 15cm
Pot diameter: 10,5cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with direct sun exposure. Develops best with at least 4 to 6 hours of sun per day. In partial shade, flowering is less intense.
Temperature: Enjoys warm climates, being sensitive to intense cold. It tolerates light frosts if the roots are protected, but growth slows below 10°C.
Watering: Regular after planting. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant. During summer, should be watered whenever the soil is dry, avoiding waterlogging.
Humidity: Adapts to moderately dry soils, as long as they are well-drained. Does not like constantly moist or waterlogged soils.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser or one high in phosphorus at the start of spring and repeat every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to encourage flowering.
Pruning: At the end of winter or after flowering periods to control growth and encourage a more compact, floriferous look. Removing dried flowers helps to prolong flowering.
Life cycle: Annual in temperate climates; perennial in warmer regions.
Soil: Light, well-drained substrate with a good percentage of sand or organic matter. Tolerates slightly alkaline soils.
Pet Friendly: The leaves and flowers are edible and non-toxic to humans or pets.

Fun facts: It’s known for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies, supporting garden biodiversity. It’s also an edible plant, used in some cultures as a leafy green in salads or stews.

WARNING!
