Lavandula angustifolia<\/em> is the classic lavender with an intense and delicate fragrance, highly valued in aromatic gardens, borders and for dried flower production. It’s a small perennial aromatic shrub with very elegant, quite narrow persistent leaves in a grey-green colour. In favourable conditions, it can reach 30 to 70cm in height. It produces fragrant flower spikes in lilac to purple tones, with inflorescences at the end of long leafless stems. It’s a plant very well adapted to Portugal’s climate, flowering mainly between late spring and summer, withstanding cold well in winter and ideal for creating masses in beds and borders, with its aroma promoting biodiversity in any space where it’s found, attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees.<\/p>\n

CUIDADOS<\/strong>
Light<\/strong>: Needs full sun to flower abundantly. Shade significantly reduces flowering and can weaken the plant.
Temperature<\/strong>: Tolerant of moderate frost. However, it prefers climates with hot, dry summers and cool winters.
Watering<\/strong>: Very drought-tolerant: water only when the soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging, which causes root rot.
Humidity<\/strong>: Prefers dry to moderately moist soils, as long as they\u2019re well-drained. Overly humid environments encourage fungal diseases.
Fertilisation<\/strong>: Not demanding – generally doesn’t require fertilisation in good, well-drained soils. To encourage flowering, apply a balanced, phosphorus-rich fertiliser in spring.
Pruning<\/strong>: Important to keep a compact shape and promote flowering. Prune lightly, cutting back about one third of new growth in spring, keeping some green foliage at the base. After flowering, remove dried flower stems. Every 3 years, do a harder prune close to ground level to renew plantings.
Life cycle<\/strong>: Perennial. It stays alive for several years in favourable conditions, keeping its characteristic foliage, flowers and scent.
Soil<\/strong>: Prefers light, well-drained substrates with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH; adapts well to poor and even stony soils.
Not Pet Friendly:<\/strong> Although not highly toxic, the flowers and oils can cause reactions in sensitive animals.<\/p>\n

Fun fact<\/strong>: Famous for its essential oil (rich in linalool<\/em> and linalyl<\/em> acetate), widely used in perfumery, aromatherapy, soap making and cosmetics. Dried flowers are used in pot-pourris<\/em> and to repel insects. The plant is also melliferous and valued in beekeeping.<\/p>\n
