With compact and elegant growth, Salvia nemorosa stands out for its dense and long-lasting flower spikes in shades of violet, lilac or purple (generally “warmer” and more intense than the blues of Salvia farinacea), which rise above the aromatic green foliage for several months. The abundant flowering attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, contributing to garden biodiversity. Thanks to its compact habit and excellent adaptation to container growing, it’s one of the best ornamental sages for pots, planters, beds and borders. It’s a hardy plant, undemanding and very tolerant of cold, heat and periods of drought once established. Flowers generously from late spring through summer, and can produce new blooms after light pruning of dried spikes.

Scientific name: Salvia nemorosa
Common names: Sage, Woodland Sage, Ornamental Sage
Família: Lamiaceae
Origin: Europe, Western Asia and Caucasus
Climate: Temperate and Mediterranean
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 50cm
Diâmetro vaso: 19cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers locations with good sun exposure, although it tolerates partial shade. During warmer periods and for potted plants, should be watered regularly, avoiding waterlogging.
Temperature: Very cold hardy, tolerating frost and moderate sub-zero temperatures. Adapts equally well to heat and dry summers.
Fertilization: Apply balanced fertilizer during spring to promote growth and flowering.
Pruning: Regularly remove dried flower spikes to encourage new blooms. At the end of winter, light renewal pruning can be carried out.
Soil: Prefers fertile and well-drained soils, but easily adapts to most soil types.
Pet Friendly: Considered a safe plant for pets.

Fun fact: Like rosemary, mint and basil, Salvia nemorosa belongs to the Lamiaceae family.
