Drought-resistant, easy to maintain and highly attractive to pollinators, it’s an excellent choice for Mediterranean gardens, pots and planters. Its gentle scent and the contrast between the flowers and the foliage make it a standout presence year-round in mild climates, making it an excellent choice for Mediterranean gardens, borders, pots or planters, and it’s often used in low-maintenance gardens thanks to its low water needs.

Scientific name: Lavandula dentata
Common names: Toothed Lavender, French Lavender
Família: Lamiaceae
Origin: Mediterranean Region
Category: Outdoor plant
Approximate height: 40cm
Pot diameter: 19 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Requires direct sun exposure. For compact growth, more silvery foliage and abundant flowering, at least 6 hours of sun per day is recommended.
Watering: Moderate. Water regularly after planting, reducing frequency as the plant establishes. Tolerates drought periods well. Avoid prolonged waterlogging. If in a pot, watch out for saucers and decorative pots without drainage holes where irrigation or rainwater can stagnate, promoting root rot.
Temperature: Very resistant to heat, wind and drought. Tolerates light frosts, but may suffer during prolonged periods of intense cold, so in colder areas of the country, it should be protected during the coldest months of the year.
Soil: Prefers light, well-drained and low-fertility substrates/soils. Adapts well to calcareous and sandy soils.
Fertilisation: Not very demanding. One application of organic fertiliser in spring will be sufficient.
Pruning: Remove spent flowers to extend flowering. Can be lightly pruned after the main flowering to maintain a compact shape and stimulate new growth.
Pet Friendly: Generally considered safe for dogs and cats.

Fun facts: Lavandula stoechas is the lavender we call “Rosmaninho” and it’s the one most commonly found in Portuguese fields. Lavandula angustifolia is the classic lavender, the typical “Alfazema”, used in perfumery and aromatherapy. Lavandula dentata (especially the ‘Candicans’ cultivar) is the most ornamental of the three. But there’s no doubt that all lavenders are well adapted to our climate, are highly ornamental, and much loved by bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, contributing positively to the biodiversity of any garden, terrace or even balcony.

WARNING!
