Cultivated for thousands of years, it stands out for its rustic beauty, large decorative leaves and, of course, the delicious figs it produces during summer and early autumn.
Relatively fast-growing and easy to care for, it adapts very well to the Portuguese climate, tolerating intense heat, drought and poor soils. It can be grown in the ground, in gardens or on farmland. In these cases, and with the right conditions, it can reach around 8 m in height, forming a wide, lush and highly ornamental canopy.
When grown in a pot, its growth is naturally more contained. Even so, we recommend using generously sized pots or planters, making it an excellent option for patios, terraces, urban vegetable gardens and small family orchards.
In addition to the ornamental value of its lush foliage, which provides pleasant shade in the hottest months, the fig tree offers sweet, aromatic fruit much appreciated for eating fresh, jams, desserts and many culinary uses. It’s a very long-lived tree that, with little care, can provide abundant harvests for many years.

Scientific name: Ficus carica
Common names: Fig tree, common fig
Family: Moraceae
Origin: Mediterranean Basin and Western Asia
Climate: Mediterranean, Temperate and Subtropical
Category: Outdoor plant
Approx. height: 50–70 cm
Pot diameter: 20 cm

CUIDADOS
Light: Prefers full sun. For vigorous growth and good fruit production, direct sun exposure for most of the day is recommended.
Watering: Moderate. Once established, it has good drought tolerance. In a pot, it needs more regular watering, especially during summer and in the first years after planting.
Temperature: Very well adapted to the Portuguese climate. It tolerates high temperatures and withstands moderate frosts during winter dormancy.
Fertilising: Apply organic matter or a suitable fruit-tree fertiliser in spring to encourage growth and fruiting.
Pruning: Should be done during the dormant period, at the end of winter. The aim is to control the tree’s size, improve air circulation and encourage fruit production.
Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soils, although it adapts easily to different types of ground, including limestone and relatively poor soils.
Pet Friendly: Ripe fruit is safe to eat. However, the milky sap in the stems and leaves can cause skin irritation in sensitive people and gastrointestinal discomfort if ingested in quantity by pets.

Fun fact: Contrary to what it seems, the fig is not a true fruit, but a structure called a syconium, which contains hundreds of tiny flowers inside. The fig tree is one of the oldest cultivated trees known to humankind, with records of its use dating back over 10,000 years.

WARNING!
